Eldest son of Joseph and Caroline Story of Bingfield, County Cavan. Born in Edinburgh where his father practised as a barrister. When he was still young, he moved with his parents to the family estate in County Cavan, Ireland. This place was called Bingfield after the property of the same name near Hexham from which the family had originated. He had eight younger siblings: Oswald, Louisa, Edward, Arthur, Francis, Evelyn, Charlotte and Florence. In the manner of their time they all shortened their names ( except Arthur ) to Bob, Oz, Lou, Ted, Fran, Evie, Charlie and Florie.
After lessons at home with his mother Caroline (nee Reed) or a governess, Robert went to Twyford Prep School near Winchester. In the summer term of 1869 he entered Harrow.
On leaving school in 1873 he briefly attended a 'crammer' in Sunbury in order to pass his entrance exams for the army. Later that same year he obtained a commission in the Hampshire Yeomanry (60th Foot), transferring after three years to the 60th rifles, the Kings Royal Rifle Corps.
