1st  Month                                           JANUARY 1922                              31  Days

 

The new year finds me at Bingfield getting over a sharp attack of heart trouble & obliged to be very careful. May in Cheltenham with Bessie suffering from the same complaint. I am also in very bad financial circumstances after a year of unprecedented loss by farming. Vera, Laila & Teddie are here, the latter getting over Indian Fever. Pat & Basil in New Zealand & Ralph in Calcutta Ð all doing well.

Vera & Teddie to church. Wrote to May.

                                                            Bank Holiday, Scotland. Holiday, Stock Exchange.

                                                                Quarter Sessions Week.

Drove into Cavan morn. I saw Halpin about the Farnadaly proposal.

Had the step of the trap mended. Signed Ret: Pay voucher before Dr Clarke etc. Teddie went out hunting near Derrylane.

Fine, but showers. Manure carting. Brady & Teddie ferreting they shot 5 rabbits. BradyÕs boy David smashed off the top of his finger with sledgehammer.

Fine. BradyÕs house being disinfected etc. Vera & Teddie drove into Cavan. Accounts. Mc.Cabe (whom I used to employ) came to see me, declaring Pat. Smith had not paid him for work done here 5 years or so ago. Told him to consult his solicitor Maloney.

Fine. Manure carting. Brady & Teddie ferretted & got 4 rabbits. Wrote to May & Freeman.

Fine & colder. Teddie & Brady went out shooting & got two rabbits. Heard from & wrote to May.

Fine and a frosty. Teddie & I ferreted a little but got nothing

Vera & he went to Cavan. Peace treaty ratified by the Dail.

Wet. A lot of odd jobs. Wrote to May. Brady working at his house.

                                             Peace Treaty ratified with Germany, 1920

Fine. Hay carting. Teddie & I brought out the hidden china, & found that most of the mended pieces had come asunder from the damp.

                                             Hillary Law Sittings begin

Fine with showers. Vera left by the early train for Dublin.

Men pulling turnips. Teddie & I got up the books that May had packed in a large box, & put them back into their shelves. Wrote to May & to Halpin in re Farnadaly.

A lot of odd jobs.

Fine. Hedge cutting. Joined Brady & Teddie out ferretting. I shot 5 Rabbits with BradyÕs gun. They got 12 in all.

Wet. We all stayed at home.

Snow. Wrote to May & the Inspector of Taxes about his demand for income tax. Teddie went to the Blackleys.

Father Meehan came & spent the afternoon over books etc.

Rather warmer. Wrote to May & to Halpin and Askins about Hoonans tenancy.

Cold & windy. Teddie & Laila to Church. Cleaned the Heath Room

A bitterly cold wind fairly drove the men from work in the turnips. Wrote to May who had written to Teddie.

A little warmer. Wrote to May. Askins called and gave me some remarkable information about Farnadaly. T.E. That my lease really expired about 20 years ago etc. I left the matter in his hands, as he was in touch with Lord Farnham & Blackley.

Rather warmer. Top dressing. Made an iron back for the library grate. Teddie & Laila went to a concert in Crossdoney

Cold & raw. Topdressing. Teddie & Brady ferretted & got 5 rabbits. Wrote to May & Vera.

Got the rest of the china out of the old kitchen chimney & repaired some of it which was broken. Also got the box of plate from the bank & unpacked books & papers.

 

Wrote either this day or the next to the Secretary Land Commission calling attention to an unanswered letter.

Wet. Simons came & made out my farm appeal shewing a loss of £850 on last years farming.

May still in bed. Wrote to Evie. My heart not right again.

Road also to Askins about the lease of Farnadaly.

Fine. Men raising road metal in the Rocks. Mrs Taylor called.

Teddie took Laila for a ride.

Teddie & Laila to church. May down stairs in the dining room.

Teddie went to shoot with Dr Smith & got two snipe. Found where Gillson is poaching in the Rocks. Sent Ralph his medals.

 Heard from & wrote to Halpin about Farnadaly.

Teddie & I spent the day washing & putting away the china which we had taken from its hiding place.

Men raising stone. Self busy china mending.

Ploughing in Monery & training in the Back Lawn. Busy china mending & cleaning  the kitchen range. Mrs Moore, Kilmore called, Mrs Moore, Lisnamandra, sent to enquire for May.

Raid on Ulster mentioned in the papers.

Ploughing in camp Monery & draining in the Back Lawn. Miss Corrigan called. Heard from & wrote to Tissington Tatlow. He says he means to close his office. Heard from the Land Commission an evasive answer.

Took Laila to Mrs Thompsons by mid day train from Cavan, stopping at the GrayÕs in Armagh on the way. Later in the day there was a massacre of special police at Clones Station. Miss Moody, a sister in law of Moody-Manners and Miss Bell were the other guests.

Morn. service at Rostrevor. Went for a stroll aft. with the girls.

Came home via the 10.28 a.m. train. Stopping 4 hours at Armagh, when I again went to the Grays. No visible signs of a struggle at Clones Station. Found that Teddie had gone to London & May much better.

Cold & raw. Brady tried to sell a beast for me, but failed

Wrote to Mrs Thomson & Vida. Sewed quantity of seams for my night shirts which May is making. Posted various parcels to New Zealand.

Man carting potatoes to the coach house. Heard from & wrote to Tissington Tatlow about the Land Commission.

Very cold. Men carting in potatoes. Drove into Cavan with Brady for shopping. May not so well.

Not so cold. Men carting stones for back lane. Hewed a squeegee & a broom, mended the house maids box, & a window at the top of the stairs

Cold. Drove into Cavan to a meeting of the Antiquarian Society with Dr Smith. Askins looked in even. about the Farnadaly business

Heard that ÒBoyÓ Thompson is ill. Wired to have Laila home tomorrow & to Hampton Gray about seeing May. Wrote a short line to Teddie.

My grazing auction went a fairly well. Wrote to Mrs Storey of Karrikal

Brady brought back the magnets & I filled the tank. Mrs Wagg went to Drumroe. Mrs Jackson called P. P. C. & Mrs Smith also called.

Wrote to Secretary of Land Commission about securities sold for succession duty, & to Inspector of Taxes in answer to questions.

Men fencing round the pond.

Sonny & warmer. Tightened the fly wheel of the engine. A Major Brunicardi came from a Govt. Valuation dept. & went round the house & place with me.

Some tools came from London.

Rain, hail, wind, & sunshine. The cart mare had a foal.

Heard from Halpin about the Farnadaly affair. Brady went to see Reid & Askins, but both were out.

Made a will leaving all I have to Pat. Walked home with some difficulty.

They said that about 12 raiders came & took blankets, clothing, watches, clocks, silver, etc. which they carried away in sacks.

Wrote to Strahan  for a van to remove some of our things & to Vida.

McDonald with James Leddy, who is dying. May and I worked at books.

James Leddy died about 4. P.M. May went to the wake & stayed out all night, causing both of us sleeplessness.

Drove into Cavan & saw Halpin. Sold the house in Main Street to R. Cinnamond for £750. He Gave Halpin a Cheque for one fourth on deposit. Sale to be completed by the 25th. Discussed the matter of a sale of this place.

Hoonan which seem to get him into a better frame of mind. Brady sold seven head of cattle at Cavan fair.

Heard from and wrote to Halpin about costs of sale of Cavan house.

StrahanÕs van with 3 men came & took away a lot of furniture, plate, pictures, & books. They got away by a 1.15 P.M. Fixed two mops & mended a fence. Wrote to Askins about Brady.

Heard from & wrote to Major Hooper, Shrops. Regt. J. J. Taylor began thrashing for me. He helped me to fix the fly wheel of my pumping engine. Sent Strahan a book which was left behind yesterday. Very tired.

 Drove into Cavan with Cox & signed a copy of BradyÕs deed for Farnadaly which was burnt in the Dublin Post Office. Hair cut.

Mullery came to the engine & port on a new magneto which ran well.

Mullery came & took the pumping engine to pieces. We found in the long bearing carrying the shaft very much worn. I finally sent Cox into Cavan with part of the engine in the pony cart, & Mullery took the rest in his car. Heard from Oswald and also May to whom I wrote.

Holiday for the men. Mc.Donald went to Cavan about the case of a madman named Sheridan who was threatening to kill Robbie with a bill hook. Civic Guard came about 6. P.M. Went round the place with J. Rorke. Received the DoctorÕs report on MayÕs case & wrote to her. Also to Halpin, & Tissington about the mortgage.
