The New Year finds me at Bingfield with May & our little Laila

On Jan 1ST. 1916 I wrote that I had means to carry on for that year with care Ð now I know not how we are to get through the coming year Ð I have not the means to carry on all the education needed for my family, and in spite of all my toil I cannot make this place really pay. Pat has joined the New Zealand forces. Ralph & Basil are at St. PaulÕs school, & Teddie & Vera at Cheltenham.

 

Went out with Brady on the lake Ð lots of birds very wild  Shot nothing

Wrote to Mrs. J. B. & Evie. Sharpened and set my cross cut saw (small one)

Men pulling turnips etc Ð some rain.

Men pulling turnips, clipping horses, working in garden etc.

Worked with Simons at a return (FarmerÕs appeal) for income tax after cleaning the inner yard, & putting a handle to a broom.

Galligan carting turnips, Mc. Donald in the garden. Drove to Cavan, dropping May & Laila for the sale at Kilmore, lodged money in the bank, saw Louis Smith about a trouble on Waggs farm paid the Stores book etc etc. Wrote to White King, who sent Laila 10/-

SalaÑiÑ ˆ m arrived with an Urdu letter of mine in it.

Galligan carting turnips. Cleaned & polished MayÕs fender & fire irons etc. Brady cutting ivy & cleaning a ditch. Mc. Donald in the garden. Sent my Farmers Appeal to Surveyor of Taxes

Wrote to Nasir Ali. Answered an advt. In the Times above Ð an Engineering College at Fareham.

Holiday for the men. Ferreted with Brady. Toothache at night

 

Shot 4 rabbits & Brady 2  Ferrets caught 3. We tried to dig out another, but could not on account of thick roots.

 

          Lent Pat Magee £3 to be paid in one month. Paid in June

In bed till lunch after a night of pain. Wrote to King & Evie.

                                             Cambridge Lent Term begins

Brady & Galligan carting manure to Cow Pasture. Mc. Donald in the garden. Board out a nut of a plough & re-screwed it & began to work on the legs of a wheelbarrow.

 

Brady dugout Rabbit killed by the ferrets on Saturday

 

Bingfield                       9 TUESDAY [9-356] Fire Insurances expire

Galligan carting manure. Mc. Donald in the garden. Brady went to Cavan to try to sell the mare, but failed. Worked at the wheelbarrow & got in the oilcloth from the front of the house Ð put some down in back hall.

Sent Teddie MarcelÕs letter.

 

Brady paid back £5 I had lent him and cleared his debt.

Wet part of the day. Brady cutting ivy in the garden

Galligan carting manure. Finished the wheelbarrow.

 

Bingfield                       11 THURSDAY [11-354] Hillary Law Sittings begin

Brady & Galligan cutting a hedge & ploughing. Mc. Donald in the garden. Went to Cross-doney to stamp insurance cards.

Brady sold the mare for £16.17 .0 nett. Received £16 cash

Put down some oil cloth in the back hall, sharpened my axe and the briar knife. Brady cutting hedges, Galligan did some ploughing, but had to stop on account of cold & rain.   Made out an account of the cultivatable land on the place.

Mc. Donald in the garden.

 

Wrote to the Postmaster Cavan about the mail car DriverÕs duties.

Cold with some snow & rain. Men putting hay onto lofts, sawing wood etc. Brady went to Cavan on business. Worked at putting down oilcloth in the back hall.

Morn service. Saw Moore about the Mail Car driver. Quiet day at home.

Hard frost at night.

Brady began breaking ClerkinÕs field. Mc. Donald in the Garden. Went to Cross-doney to telephone to the Postmaster, but he was away.

Brady cutting hedges, Galligan ploughing, Mc. Donald in the garden.

Ferreted & shot one rat in the haggard Ð went for rabbits afterwards.

Brady ploughing. Mc. Donald & Galligan hedge cutting. Put a new rung into ladder. Wrote to Os and to Mr. Armitage about an appointment at Oxford for Ralph. Frost. Snow lying.

Wrote to Dr. Waterfield about Teddie going to Sandhurst etc.

Sent back a signed a paper to Edwards & Good about the Richardson trust. Worked at income tax questions.

Brady ploughing. Galligan carting manure with donkey. Mc. Donald odd jobs. Made a leather boot for the young horse and pulled the pieces my fatherÕs old portmanteau for the leather.

Brady went to Granard to see about a horse. Galligan ploughing

Mc. Donald hedges. Mr. Askins called & got me to mend a trace for him.

May to church. Quiet day at home. Wrote to Basil.

Galligan ploughing. Brady & Mc. Donald opening rabbit trenches in the Barrack field. Went with Brady to Cross-doney to see some horses, but they never turned up.

Wagg & I swept the library chimney. Took two pieces & cleaned the lock of the front door & fix the handle which had come off.

Wrote to Inspector of Taxes, as a collector is dunning me.

Ploughing etc. Wrote out a list of seeds required.

Half a gale & bitter cold frost. Galligan ploughing. Mc. Donald burning hedge cuttings.

Very cold & half a gale. Brady & Galligan went to Arva to try to get a horse, seed oats & potatoes, but failed to do so.

Saw Borrowes about Reapers & Self binders.

Mc. Donald cutting wood etc.

Very cold. Brady went to Cavan to see about a horse. Men cutting manure to cow pasture. Cleaned plugs of engine & fitted a tube to the crank case.

Very cold. Stayed at home & wrote to Ralph.

Manure carting to Cow pasture. Brady mowing the lawn. Mc. D absent

Attended a meeting in Cavan for the distribution of Certificates of honour to the families of those at the front. Train there & back.

Brady finished mowing the lawn. Mc. Donald absent. Galligan carting flax for Long. Took to pieces & cleaned a couple of sparking plugs & tried them in the engine Ð they went well.

Brady cutting the hedge at the bottom of Glouds field etc. Went to Cross-doney to get stamps etc. Wrote to Curly Hutton about Teddie.

Took the 2 .1 P. M. train & came here. Miss King staying

Went in to Town by motor with the rest. Lunch at Trinity College. Went up Sackville St. & saw the Post Office & Liberty Hall.

Left my glasses at Yeates for a new frame, also WaggÕs Ð Saw Strahan & Murray & also J. N. Home by train.

Went by train to Dalkey, lunch at Tudor House. Did some shopping in Kingstown, saw J. Goff at the yacht club & so home.

T & music at the J. BÕs. the Richardsons etc there. Very cold snow.

Saw Murray 11  a.m.He took out two stumps. Got some Kites & books for Laila, saw about plate & China etc  Lunch at Red Bank.

Saw Murray 10 45 a.m. He stopped the tooth. Lunch with Lawless at the Yacht Club, then on to the Tatlows where I spent an hour

Wrote to May etc morn. Lunch in Dublin Ð Saw Murray 4 .P.M.& did a little shopping.

Fixed a lot of Knives & forks into their handles, & did a little work on a map for King. Went to Dalkey aft. Called longer Ormsby HamiltonÕs (in) and the Lockes (out).

 Went to the Jun Stores, & got 7 lbs. sugar etc & two are Picture House in Grafton Street.

The Kings drove me to Black rock. Took train from there & came home travelling with Borrows from Broadstone.

Stayed at home & put various things straight.

Pumped. The cable of the engine gave way at both ends Ð repaired it. Tried for rats with ferrets, but got none

Lengthened the cable of the pumping engine. Put down the oilcloth in the back hall. Made a stick for measuring milk. Brady went to Cavern fair to try to get a horse Ð no actual success.

Very hard frost. Brady bought a young mare for me from Mc. Cullagh of R Kilmore. Got Hoonan to sweep the library chimney from the top.

Men cutting a very old hedge in the Horsepark. Ferreted with Brady

 

Shot 5 Rabbits Ð all I fired at. Brady shot one & dug it & another out

For & rain at last. Men cutting hedges & Brady training the new mare. May & Laila went to Danes fort. Drove to Cross-doney to get change

Worked at the old Kitchen screen. Brady applied for rise of wages Ð agreed to give £1 a week. Men cleaning the drive.

Wrote to Pat Magee about my loan to him on Jan 6th.

 

Lent Brady £1. Paid March 3rd.

Morn. service at Kilmore. Quiet day at home.

Wet day. Men in the garden. Port handles onto small brass lamps etc.

Brady went to Cavan to get seed oats.

Wet day. Mc. Donald went to Cavan to get oats etc. Brady & Galligan painting the gates from the drive. Cussen from Dublin came to seeing pictures, silver, china etc, but we made no deal. Fitted a new part to the lock of the door in back hall. May & Mrs. Wagg have very bad colds. Got in 45 gallons lamp oil.

Showers. Men in garden. Brady away on his own business.

Men in garden morn. Brady started ploughing aft with the mare Ð she worked well for a first attempt. Mended the rabbit wire in the Lower Garden. May had to go to bed early on account of her influenza. The Waggs have it also.

May & Laila in bed & the Waggs also ill, but able to be up.

Mc. Donald helping in the house. Brady & Galligan ploughing in the Barrack field & BradyÕs brother & another man with two ploughs in the Round Bank. I shot round Thick pennyÕs warshes & Monery bog, but shot very badly Ð fired 17 shots & only Ð

Went out on the Lake with Brady. Ran up the River, then to Killagowan, & home round Tuch.

Brady shot a plover & a Tufted Duck.

May up for a little. Went to see if Emma Beattie could come to help in the house, but she could not. Laila up & about.

Brady & Galligan ploughing. The mare collar galled. Mc. Donald in the garden. Sent off a form about Tillage to the Ballinanagh police. Wrote to Tissington about his account which I have somehow mislaid. May able to be downstairs but weak. The Waggs still seedy

Cleaned the magneto of the engine & the spark plug & did some repairs to the boat.

Brady & Mc. Donald ploughing. Mc. Donald in the garden.

He moved the straw in the barn & killed 8 rats. Repaired the lock of the garden door.

Odd jobs as usual. Sergt. Johnston came to tell me that Fitz Patrick, who I believe stole TatlowsÕs acct. Off my library table last monday, is doing 14 days imprisonment for some offence in Cavan.

Wind rain & snow. Stayed at home & wrote to Ralph & Askins.

Gale & rain & very cold. Brady training the mare. Men wheeling in coal. Finished the repairs to the old kitchen screen.

Drove to Petty Sessions morn. The new R. M. Gerard came up after they were over & intro-duced his wife, daughter of Sir C. Cameron. Cold & Frost at night  Brady & Galligan ploughing

Cold Ð some snow, frost, & thaw. Brady ploughing. Men preparing ground for black oats in Monery bottom. Spent some time with May arranging photos etc.

Brady ploughing morn, but had to go for the vet as the horse ÒCharlieÓ was lame. When he came, he castrated at calf. Men preparing ground for oats. Blazed a pane in the large book case in the drawing room.

Morn. Service. Quiet day at home. Bright & sunny, but cold.

Brady ploughing Mc. Donald in garden. Galligan preparing ground for oats. Magee came and repaired the stable wall & parts near it cut some irons for him to fix the garden door.

Brady ploughing. Mc. Donald in garden. Galligan preparing ground for oats. Packed the motor pump & made two slashers out of sythe blades. Fine & sunny.

Brady ploughing. Men preparing ground for oats. Roach to James Lord to enquire what amount of potatoe ground was included in the menÕs ÒprivilegesÓ, and to the Deptnt. Of Agriculture Dublin about BradyÕs farm. Wrote also to Charlie to tell her of Gwen ClementÕs death.

Fine & sunny. Brady ploughing. Men preparing ground for oats

Simons came to see about my grazing auction.  Ordered Seed oats. Wrote to Mr. Armitage to say that I must withdraw Basil after the summeer term, at least pro tem.

Brady ploughing. Men preparing oats ground  Odd jobs over some brass castors. May & Laila went with Mrs. Moore (BishopÕs wife) to a sale at Deredis School house.  Wrote to Simons to order flax seed.

100th anniversary of my fatherÕs birth. Sent a post card to mother 7 & wrote to Vida from whom I had heard. Brady ploughing. Men away

My day at home. Made to church. Fine.

Brady ploughing. Men preparing oats ground. Repaired a set of castors taken from the old harness room table & a window in the side door broken by Laila. Showers & stormy at night.

Brady ploughing. Men preparing oats ground & getting seed from a station. Mrs. Gerard, wife of the new R. M. to tea.

Brady & Galligan ploughing Ð the latter till Brady went to an auction at Coracanwy. Mc. Donald harrowing coach ground with the donkey. A little out of sorts. Began a long letter to my mother, appealing to her for the rest of her jointure & finished it late at night.

Brady bought a cart for £6.10 .0

Brady ploughing. Men at oats ground. Saw the Scotts about mangolds, the turkey hen etc. Very cold. Much better.

Arranged the cupboard is under the stairs & other places.

Brady ploughing. Men at other jobs. May & Laila went to Dr. SmithÕs.

Wrote to Mr. Armitage about removing Basil. Sent his letter to Charlie. Wrote to Tissington about the agreement for the StewardÕs house. Sent the draft of my letter to mother to Evie for his opinion. Wrote to Dept. Of Agriculture about BradyÕs farm.

Brady sowing with Galligan harrowing. Mc. Donald got up 141 young trees out of the Sally garden & we then burnt the grass.

Brady & he took them to plant on the hill where needed.

 

Very much upset by a most angry, intemperate, and abuse of letter from Vida, saying she will ruin my family after my death. Reply to it. Wrote also to Charlie late at night.

Brady & Galligan sowing & harrowing. Mc. Donald at odd jobs & in the garden. Wrote again to Vida.

Mc. Donald in the garden. Brady & Galligan sowing & ploughing. Made a lot of seed labels

Heard from Evie about my proposed appeal Ð replied. Heard from Charlie replied. Heard from W. B. Croft and closing a problem Ð replied.

Sent another letter to Vida. My hay auction went off well.

My sick heifer died. Sowing & harrowing going on. Put right the union for the stand pipe in the yard. Wrote to Florie, & to the Adjutant General for news of PatÕs arrival. Snow showers & cold.

Went into Cavan by train. Saw Halpin & got him to make me a short will leaving all I possess any power over to May. Talked over the possible sale of this place. Shopping, hair cutting etc. Home by 4.25 P. M train.

Brady & Galligan Ploughing in Cow pasture  Mc. Donald setting potatoes etc. Put at top onto a spade handle. Mrs. Smith called & brought two girls to play with Laila.

May to church. Quiet day. Heard from Florie that Aunt Agnes is dying. Wrote a letter to Vida after post time.

Brady finished ploughing the lucerne ground & cross harrowed part of the cow pasture. Galligan cut ivy in the garden. Mc. Donald took the iron harrow to Cavan to be sold. Dr. & Mrs. Douglas called ÐThe Dr. examined May for insurance.

A sensible & long letter from Vida, to which I replied. Wrote to Florie.

Frost & snow.

Snow & very cold. Went into Cavan by train & saw Gamble C. T about Constable Strain who came to me yesterday about his being transferred to Glau. etc etc. travelled in the guardÕs van, as the train was crowded.

Bitterly cold with wind & snow. Brady & Galligan carting manure. Mc. Donald absent. Borrowes came & brought me some poems he had written. He afterwards drove me to the Easter Vestry meeting in the old Church. I was elected to the Select Vestry. Home 10. P. M. in intense cold.

Galligan started with some timber for the saw mills, but the horse fell on the Avenue. He was not hurt. After getting him shod Ð G. took the timber to Cavan. I made a nut for BasilÕs bicycle.

Spent most of the day cleaning brass. Stopped cracks in the front door.

Shot one rabbit. Ferret caught another.

Called at Farnham on the way home. Burrowes was there & told us they had left today. Had to walk home from Kilmore, as the mare (Sally) jibbed badly. Wrote to Teddie and enclosing his papers for the C. S. Commissioners & to Greer about his birth, and to Askins for a baptismal certificate.

Busy about TeddieÕs Kit and is going to Dublin to be inoculated tomorrow.  Pumped for the first time for many days, but some rain fell. A little work at hay. Put a new strainer in to the Coffey Pot & began cutting down a broken oar for the small boat.

May & Teddie went to Dublin to get some of the latterÕs Kit. Teddie was inoculated for typhoid etc & came back with May buy the even train rather sore & a little out of sorts. Fine until the evening when heavy showers came on. The rest of the flax spread. Finished the oar for the small boat.

Potatoe digging. The Sergt. of police came to see me about sending my arms & plate to the barracks for safe custody.

Packed the guns & plate & saw Borrowes about the loan of his spring cart for tomorrow.

Potatoe digging. Mrs. Brady had a daughter. Wagg drove me to Cavan in BorrowesÕ market cart & I deposited the plate, seven swords, 3 shot guns & about 500 cartridges at the police barracks.

Went to Dublin by tram, saw Murray & made an appointment with him for tomorrow. Then on to Dalkey & lunched with the LÕEstranges, saw Rootham in the football field, got Kodack films in Kingstown etc.

Murray stopped one tooth & took off the gold crown of another.

Called on Porte (out)  Saw Tatlow Sen. & Billy at the office.

Lunch at Red Bank. Went for a walk on the quays. Called on the J. Bs Ð found a wedding just leaving the house Ð saw Eleanor & Joan & also Gertrude.

Team to Dalkey & Kingstown to look round, but rain prevented my going far. Saw Rootham, but Mrs. R. & Eric were out.

Murray fitted the upper plate to my mouth without teeth & took an impression of the lower jaw. Called on Dopping-Heppenstall at his house and the Kildare St. Club, but did not meet him. Lunch at the Grafton St. Picture house & went to the show. Heavy rain.

Murray fitted the hooks to my plate. Lunch with the Mercers, & went on to Sutton, where I saw Hunt who was just moving. He gave me a Persian inscription to decipher.

Morn service. Sir Thos. Miles (Pres. Royal College of Surgeons), American doctors, & Judge Ross to tea. Supper at the Greggs Ð The Guiness & Miss Seymour there.

Went by a tram to Dalkey & called on the Ormsby Hamiltons.

Took the 5.10 P. M. train & came home. A young Irish Chaplain was my companion as far as Mullingar.

Busy with accounts etc. Worked a little at the gate on the drive.

Brady marked trees for sale. Found the pumping engine wd. not work Ð sent a note to Gordon about it by Brady

Wrote to the Evinrude Motor Co. about my engine.

GordonÕs man put the pumping engine in order Ð worked with him.

Brady & Wagg cleaned out the tanks on the roof & I refilled them after flushing out the drum & boiler. Accounts etc.

Found that the drain from the engine room was stopped up.

Worked nearly all day at it with Wagg & Robbie Ð cleared the lower, but not the upper part.

Cleared the rest of the Engine room drain & repaired the garden door to yard.

Bad pain in my back & groin all day. Heard from Pat, & sent on his letter to May. Heavy storm at night blew down a large ash tree across the road right in front of the house.

Men at the fallen tree. Letter from Halpin to say EmmaÕs case is put off on account of Mrs. FeganÕs illness. Rumours of an attempt at a German landing on the west coast. Wired & wrote to Mrs. White King. Wet most of the day. Stayed at home.

Heard from May that Robin Angus is missing; having been lost during an air fight in dense fog. Men at the hedge on the road.

Brady brought my guns & ammunition from Cavan police store.

Heard from Halpin that EmmaÕs case is fixed for the 11th Dec.

Men cleaned the ditch between the Rocks & Front Lawn which is choked.

I also shot a hare, but thought it had got away Ð it was found on the spot some time afterwards

May arrived unexpectedly by the mid day train. Manure carting to Barrack field Ð Carr cleaning the ditch between the Rocks (Bingfield part) & Front Lawn.

Ferreted rats with Brady & shot one or two. Worked the rest of the day with GordonÕs men at my engine. Fitted a key to the fly wheel & tested it.

Went with Halpin to the Law Courts & gave evidence in Emma BeattieÕs case. Lunch there, & did a little shopping for May on my way home. Gurdit Singh came to see me. Very lame, & a good deal of pain.

Still seedy & bad cold. J. B. Also has a nasty cold. Cleared the outlet of the wash hand basin in J. B.Õs return room. Got fish at Jun. Stores. Took 5.10 .P. M. train & came home, travelling from Mullingar with the Scotts.
