The new year finds me at Bingfield having given up my house at Dalkey. The sale of my estate and confiscation of my capital by the Land Court having obliged us to leave. Pat is on his way to New Zealand on S. S. Remuera & all the rest of the family are with us for the holidays. Ralph is still at St. Paul’s, Teddie at Cheltenham living with Bessie & going as a day boy to the College. Basil a boarder at Tudor House. Vera with Bessie & going to Cheltenham Ladies College. Laila growing fast. May & I are in good health, but growing older. Our household consists of Mr. & Mrs. Wagg & their son John – our former caretakers. We are but little affected by the war here – only provisions are getting dearer.

Barometer lower than I ever remember it, & a heavy gale.

Finished the door of the Engine Room & other odd jobs.

Tried to pump out the engine room with my field pump but made no impression on the water. Turned a peg for hanging up harness.

Petit Sessions Morn. Worked at valves etc for the donkey pump. The Vincent Kennedy’s called.

Worked all day at the donkey pump, but failed to find the fault in it.

Wrote to Pat, & began a letter in French to Morin.

Ferreted. The top of the motor engine came back repaired

Power’s men came to work at the pump (donkey one)  They said the valve was in fault, so I sent Smith to Moyne Hall for one. He came back very late without it got the motor engine together & ran it.

Stayed at home & packed etc.

Took the 7.25 a.m. train from Cross-doney. Got two teeth stopped by Murray. Hair cut etc & came on here. Mrs Judevin staying

Vera & Ralph went back to school.

Went to Dalkey & saw my boat, lunch with the Roothams, went on to the Club saw Crampton, Lawless Hamilton, & Tatlow & had a long chat with Latter.

Got a gun at Kavanagh’s in Dame Street for the boys.

Came home by the 4.40 P. M. train – all well.

Mended toys for Laila. Made the handle for a coal hammer, fixed the drying room stove etc. Mrs. Askin’s called.

I shot 5 Rabbits & O’Reilly 3 & we each shot a snipe in Hoonan’s bog. Ferrets caught 2 Rabbits Total 10 Rabbits & 2 Snipe

Worked at the magneto of the pumping engine, & ran it a little & also worked at the drain for the engine room.

O’Reilly drove Dr. Smith & me to Losset & on to Lough Davan and Corduff. Snipe rather scarce.

Work at the pumping engine, but failed to put it right – got Andy West, Burrowes’ chauffeur to come over, & he at once shewed me what was wrong. J. Rorke came to see me about coals.

On jobs. Drove into Cavan aft to see about pipes for the new drain etc, & brought in my field pump for sale.

Heard from & wrote to Arthur Heathcote  Odd jobs. Froze but thaw later.

Worked with May at the rockery by the side door. Wrote to Mr Rootham about Teddie, & to Mr. Armitage about Ralph & also to Nasir Ali.

Bored holes in a plate of iron for a grating for the new drain

Fitted an iron bar to the grating of the library stove & soldered the engine tank etc. The new drain pipes laid nearly up to the yard wall

Put a bolt on to the side door, & fitted a stone to the step to try to stop rain from coming in. Called with May on the Vincent Kennedys (in)

Shot Farnadaly & Swanns bogs & got as far as Killawella when heavy rain & wind caused me to go home. Pump came back

 

Shot 5 snipe of which I lost one though I actually touched it with my hand & missed a wood cock.

Put the pump together but found another part broken bored & bolted it together. It then worked, but only very badly. A very hard days work.

Heavy rain nearly all day. Stayed at home.

Worked at the pump & got it to go, though it still is rather stiff. Tried the hose etc.

Sharpened & set Wagg’s saw. Put the pump right. Ferreted a little aft.

 

          Shot a rat & 5 Rabbits & dug out one. Total 6

Odd jobs in the house. Cleaned out the drying room etc.

Made a handle for a screwdriver etc, & saw to the closing of the new drain in the inner yard. Lady Farnham & sister called.

Odd jobs. Eased the green house door etc. Wrote to the Principal of Cheltenham College about Teddie’s choice of a career.

Odd jobs – made a curtain ring & worked at curtain poles etc.

Johnny Rorke came to see me about his threshing machine, which had broken down.

Went to see Rorkes threshing machine at Drumora which had broken & shot the marshes, shooting badly. Tried to pump for the house, but both Engine & pump gave trouble.

Worked at the pumping engine most of the day, & got the magneto to work rather better. Soldered the pantry lamp. Heavy rain aft

Soldered the pantry lamp again & painted it. Ferreted.

Rather tired after a bad night. Repainted the pantry lamp etc.

Heard from the Principal of Cheltenham College about Teddie & Wrote to Booth Bros about their bill for repairs to my motor boats reversing gear.

Odd jobs. Shewed May how to run the pumping engine. Saw Dr. Smith to arrange about shooting tomorrow.

 Heard of the death of Aunt Caroline.

Went for a run in the Evinrude boat with Dr. nearly as far as Deryheen fine sunny day – some ice on the lake.

Repaired a bed in the Wing Room. Wrote to the Principal of Cheltenham College to say that Teddie can go to the Army Side.

Ferreted morn. Ran the pump aft & put in rather over 400 gallons of water, but the engine & pump both went badly. Wrote to Evie.

Worked at pegs for harness etc. Dr. Burke came to see Mary but we both failed to persuade her to go to the infirmary.

Heard from Emmie Collet of the death of her brother Fred. Wrote to her, & to Evie & Vida about the boy’s holidays. Finished the pegs for harness. Wet nearly all day. Did not go out.

Odd jobs Laila in bed with a cold. Hallowes came to see Johnny Wagg & Laila. Heard from Evie & send him a card in reply.

Served on the grand jury at the Assizes morn. Tested the engine & pump with a speedometer aft. Wrote to Pollock about it.

Fitted at piece of moulding to hold a screen to save the paper ?, by dining room door. Blasted some stumps on the back lane.

Pumped in 500 gallons of water, but the engine gave some trouble. Fixed the library stove etc.

Morn. service. Wrote to the Stores about a cheque sent to them for Cigarettes on Feb 21st. Letter from Pat.

Pumped water for the house. Sharpend a saw etc.

Sent Mrs. Wagg to Cavan with John to see the doctor. Got my boat up & began some repairs. Worked with May at shrubs in front of the house. Began a letter to Pat.

 

Bingfield                    17 WEDNESDAY [76-289] St. Patrick. Bank Holiday, Ireland

Morris the plumber came & transferred the stop tap from the outer pump pipe to the inner one & took down the donkey pump. Found the valve seats quite worn out. Ferreted & shot one rat & ferret killed another in the lower garden. Finished my letter to Pat.

Caught one rabbit in the lower garden.

Got the boats into the brew house & made a couple of brackets for one & bolted a ring onto it for the painter. Put down Virus for rats.

Slight snow lying morn. Mended the stable door.

Pumped water, cleaned the fowls house etc. & repaired the door.

Mrs. Hallowes, Mrs. Findlater, & Mrs. Blackwell called.

Wrote to Dean & Smith about a valve for the donkey pump

Mended a water can. Drove into Cavan for a little shopping.

Made 16 buttons for May. Put up a new curtain in the Bath room.

Got out the stump of an ash tree on the lawn etc etc.

Put up the sun dial in front of the house, & did some small repairs to a boat.

Pumped water & got the engine to run all right for a time, when I had more trouble with it. Worked a little at the Monery Kesh?.

Ran the engine are little & fitted the tank, but had some trouble with it. Oats being sowed in the Cow pasture.

Worked with Wagg at the swing gate on the drive & put up the stones round the sun dial. The engine refused to start even.

Morn service. Strolled round the place. Ran the engine a little, but had trouble with it. Wrote to Evie about my affairs

Got the engine to run all right with a plug from Dalkey & later telephoned to Pollock about it. Wagg & I cut the ivy on the lower bullock house.

Heard that Ralph has measles. Got up at 6 a.m. to scare crows from the oats (they were rolled to day) shot a jackdaw. Cleaned cobwebs etc out of the fowls house etc. etc.

Worked about the place. Began to transcribe some Marsyas in Hindustani for White

King.

Worked at cutting ivy etc. A man came to see my engine, & we fitted an injection tip to it. Pumped water etc.

After the man left, the engine went wrong again.

Morn. service. Worked at the engine, & got it to run, but not well.

Finished a second marsya for White King. Mrs. Armitage writes that Ralph has measles & scarlatina.

Worked at the engine. Took off the carburettor & wrote to the makers about it. Finished 8 stanzas of a long Marsia.

Morn service. Worked at the Marsia. One of Smiths’ children ill.

Ran the engine & pumped water. Worked at Marsy ukbeti.(??)

Got John to paint the kitchen scales etc. Heard from Evie & wrote to him. Sent away a long Marsya to King. etc.

Odd jobs about the place. Wagg cutting ivy & the others the small trees on the road cutting near the lodge.

Got a gate put up in Farnadaly & another one mended with cramps I had made yesterday  Mended the large yard door.

Wrote to Dean of Dean & Smiths’ about a valve for my pump i.e. the old horse pump. Made a small table for the Kitchen weights out of the old steward’s office stool, etc.

Made soda water, got Johnny to paint the lamps of the trap after I had cleaned & repaired them etc. Rainy day. Walked to the station to see about parcels etc.

Wagg & I cleaned out the house tanks & the rain water tank, & I then pumped them full & had the well cleaned out.

Made a drinking fountain for the chickens.

A plumber & man came & put in a new hot water cylinder.

I helped & did the carpenters’ work – a hard day.

Basil came home. Wrote to Evie to congratulate him on George’s recovery after his operation.

Finished the drum cupboard. Sent Wagg to see the Doctor in Ballinanagh about his hand, but he went to a quack instead

Pumped water. Did some draining in the old wood.

Telegram from Atkinson to say £80 was offered for the Laila wired in reply to close with the offer.

Ed. John Story of Newcastle send me his photo and that of the burial place of Robt Story in St. John’s Churchyard & of Bishop Story in Chichester cathedral. Took off the scullery hot water tap to get solder out of it. Burnt weeds etc.

Basil & I to morn service. Wrote to Ed. John Story

Pump water & worked all day at my engine to try to improve its starting. Wrote to Brownlee about it & also to Atkinson

Made a large hen coop for May & mended a fishing rod.

Cut in half the hen coop made yesterday, & turned it into two

Turned two iron washers for the donkey cart. Basil varnished the two boats etc. Mr. Atkins called. Asked him to look out for a herd for me, as Robbie Hoonan still objects to milking.

Pumped water, & found the fly wheel & pulley of the engine both loose & the keys would not tighten. Drove into Cavan & saw Brown at the Stores about it. Made a chicken run. Basil painted & varnished the large boat & the seats in front of the house. Heard from & wrote to Atkinson about the Laila.

Put on the new wheels to the motor pump & found them work well after the belt had been lengthened. Put on the new valve to the donkey pump. Wrote to Alfred Godley. Wired to Armitage to say that Emmie Collet could receive Ralph on Monday, but he sent him today. Heard from & wrote to Teddie.

Not well. Stayed at home.

Got my boats launched & took Basil for a run to Carrs Lough Portaflag etc. Tried trolling & bottom fishing to no purpose.

Got the fly wheel tight by means of a copper liner. Fill the tank & found the whole apparatus work very well indeed. Smith put in the donkey pump, but broke the lead part of the delivery pipe  in so doing. The new valve worked very well. The Scotts came to tea with us in the wood & brought their two children

Took out one of the jambs of the Kitchen range, & made a temporary one as well as wrote for a new one. Bolted the broken top plate together with iron straps. Heard from Ralph for the first time since he was ill. Evie asks me to calculate the contents of a tank – sent it to him.

Pumped & watered the garden. Worked at the engine the rest of the day to try to cure a knocking. I am not sure if I succeeded or not, as I could not start it to test my repairs – a hard day.

Took Mr. Hunt, Vera, Laila, & Basil for a run on the lake through the pass between Trinity Island & the Derrys to Garton aul where the children bathed. Took Hunt on to Clogh Oughter Castle. We all then went to Trinity Abbey & up the river to Paddy Molloy’s Rocks, where I landed the party & took the boat back alone.

May & Ralph to church. I went with the little girls to see Mary Jane.

 

Bingfield                       27 MONDAY [361-4] St. John, Evan. Bank Holiday

Worked at the table for Mary Fitz. Wagg & I cleared the library chimney of a lot of bricks, one of which hit me & cut my hand. Went up on the roof but could do nothing.

 

I shot a pigeon at a great height on the road; it fell in Hermitage & flew off before I could pick it up  Ralph shot 3 pigeons.

Drove with Ralph into Cavan & attended a recruiting meeting at the town hall etc.

 

Bingfield                       29 WEDNESDAY [363-2] ƒ 0h 59m P.M. (Greenwich)

Ralph & I Ferretted. Heavy gale & rain came on in the evening

 

I shot 4 Rabbits & Ralph 2.

Finished the table & other odd jobs. Wet & heavy gale.

Mended a window in the hall broken by the gale. Wet day.

Mc. Neill began cutting trees
