Jollie Family



Mary Jollie, daughter of Edward and Caroline Jollie of Patea, New Zealand was the second wife of
Lt. Col. Robert Story of Bingfield


The Jollies were French, Huguenots, who left France as a result of the Revocation of the Edict
of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. These persecuted Protestants went to Scotland, some of them to
Perth and Edinburgh. The Jollies became 'Writers to the Signet' which was a Society of Law
Agents in Scotland.


The Jollies settled in Carlisle from Dumfries-shire in the late 18th century and bacame a well
known family of printers, stationers and booksellers. They were members of the Carlisle (Fisher
Street) Presbyterian Church until the early 19th century when Francis (husband of Margaret, nee
Routledge) became Anglican.
