The New Year finds me at Mount Salus Dalkey in fairly good health. All the rest of the family well. Vera at a home for the holidays, & Pat & Ralph at Cheltenham with Bessie. Ralph about to go to St. Paul’s School, where he has taken a scholarship.

I am making arrangements to send Pat to France.

Locke sent me a lot of boards to plane. Did some of them.

Fitted bicycle chains to my small lathe & did a little planing

The Roothams, Hempils, Martins, & Miss Fraser came up Even.

Locke  came & finished planing the boards. Mrs. L. Also came.

Finished fitting the chains to my small lathe. Wrote to M. Morin at St. Lô to say I will take Pat to him.

 

Engaged Robert Magan as gardener in Moran’s place.

Morn service. Cleaned up the coach house loft, & got down at trunk for one of the boys.

Wet nearly all day. Wrote to Fran, my mother, Ralph, M. Morin, Low, Gamage, Provincial Bank etc.

Heavy gale at night.

Saw Vera off by the morn. mail boat. Breakfast at the club.

Saw my boat on the way home, & voted for the municipal election.

Went down to see my boat, but Atkinson was away.

Had a long examination of my boat morn. Met May at the 2 · 8 P. M. train & called on the Douglas Hornans at Greystones

She went even. to bridge at Tudor House.

Wrote to Armitage & paid  Ralph’s fees & to Low, Heathcote, Fran & Cara Reid. Agreed with Atkinson to build me a new boat & saw him about it.  Tea at Frasers. The Grones dined with us.

Packed up. The Richardsons to supper. Slept on board the Mail Boat.

Left Kingstown by morning mail. Went to St. Paul’s School after dinner & saw Mr. Armitage & Ralph. Went over the house. Wrote to May etc.

Letter from Mother urging me to come at once. Took tickets for Ventimizlia for self and Pat. Saw Meyer & Mortimer

Lunch at the Freelings. Wrote to mother, Fran, & Pat & wired also to Fran. Wrote to Aunt Carrie & May & Lou. Long talk to Dr. Hillard about Ralph’s studies. Saw him again at The High House. Wrote also to Mr. Rootham.

 

Euston Hotel                 22 WEDNESDAY [22-343] 3h 40m P. M. (Greenwich)

Got soap, paper, Kodak films etc. Called on Mrs. Herbert Story & spent some time there. Miss Bligh also there.

Took the 11 · 50. a.m. train. Elsie met me at Feltham station.

Found Uncle Neville very ill with creeping paralysis. Charlie Hayes also dying of cancer. Back by 4 · 11 P. M. train. Missed Pat at Waterloo, but found him here. Wrote to May & Fran.  Packed.

 

En route for                  24 FRIDAY [24-341]                 Bordighera

Took the 11 · a. m. express for Dover, & crossed to Calais. Half a gale, but sea moderate. Dined in Paris at Gare du Nord.

All night in the train.

 

La Storietta     25 SATURDAY [25-340] Conversion of St. Paul     Bordighera

Arrived at Ventimiglia about 2 · 30  P. M. Charlie met as with the carriage & drove us home. Saw Florie for a little. Long chat with Mother on various family matters

Morn. service with Mother & Charlie. Pat & I went for a walk aft. round our hill. Wrote to May. Carter-Campbells & Berrys called.

Went into the town morn. with C. Pat & I went to the Mostacini  Watch tower aft, down to the beach & along towards Ventimiglia & home through the “Gibraltar Mission”.

Drove with Charlie, Pet, & Mr. Berry to Ventimiglia & on to Troco where C & Mr. Berry stopped to photograph a picture in a church. Pat & I went on to Airol, saw the Village & the railway bridges & tunnels being made through the mountains

Picked up Berry & Charlie at Troco took photos etc. this was up the Roja Valley

Pat & I went to San Remo by train & saw Cook about our tickets. The old town etc & Harbour.

Wet morn. Finished & sent my letter to May. Drove out with Charlie & Pat up the Nervia Valley & Castle of Dolce Aqua. Went up through the old village to the castle followed by small children begging for “Un palanca”–a half penny. Wrote to Cook in London about my tickets.  Mary Field’s wedding day to George Freeman.

Wet morn. Went aft by train to Ventimiglia with Pat & climbed upb through the old town to the Roman Fort. Home by train.

Drove with Charlie & Pat morn. up the Crozier valley to the Village of San Biagio & home by the Old Roman road. Walked with Pat to Sasso aft. A lot of people to Tea – Lady Tracey & Sir George Forbes of the Indian Foreign Office among them Col. Cumming called on me.

Wet morn. Charlie, Pat, & I  drove to morn service. I returned Col. Cummings call.

Went with Pat by 10 a.m. train to Nice, saw the Harbour etc & got seats in the stand for the Battle of Flowers. Lunch & tea at Nice. Home by 5 · 10. P.M. (French time)

train. Dined at Ventimiglia. Got to the house at 9 · 30. P. M. Pleasant day.r

Wrote to May morn etc. Drove aft. With mother & Charlie to Ospedalslti & up to Col di Rode Rhode

Wrote to May morn. Played the cornet with Mr. Crossley & Miss Atkinson at the  Villa Valone aft.

Drove with Pat & Charlie through Ospedaletti & San Remo to Bussana & saw the old Village ruined by the earthquake of 1887. Walked over the mountains to Taggie in the Argentina Valley.  Very fine pictures in New Bussana church.  Home about 5Ÿ P.M. Slight rain during the day & cold wind. Wrote to White King

Wrote to Fran & Lou. Strolled down to the shore near the Casino aft with Pat.

Drove morn, with Charlie to the town & got a shawl for May & a sash for Laila.

Walked home. Wrote for rooms at a hotel in Paris. Drove with Mother aft to the Valley Boua. Sidgewicks (To remember Vida) Scotts &  Cunliffes to tea.

Morn. service with Mother & Pat. Wrote twice to May. Pat went to the Cunliffes. Various people to tea. Saw Miss Holroyd & another Lady down to the town.

Packed up etc. Called on Mr. Crossley, & said good bye to him & also to Mother & Florie before going to bed.


2nd  Month                           FEBRUARY 1913                               28 Days

 

P. L. P. Hotel                11 TUESDAY [42-323]                   Paris.

Got up at 5 · 30 A. M. Italian time & took the early train from Ventimiglia about 7 · 50 Italian time. Got to Paris about 10 · 30 P. M. French time. A nice little Russian girl & her mother  with us from Nice, & a young Frenchman towards the end of the journey

 

P. L. P. Hotel                12 WEDNESDAY [43-322] Ember Day     Paris.

Went with Pat to Cook’s office & wrote to them, sending them on my unused tickets. Took tickets for St. Lô. Wrote to M Morn. Walked to the Place Vendome & Rue de Rivoli, where I got a dictionary of nautical terms. Went through the Thuilleries Gardens to the Rue Freshel (after lunch at Hôtel Maurice)

Tea & a pleasant chat with Mrs. Viel & two lady callers. On to the Bois de Boulogue, & back by Taxicab.

 

Paris                              13 THURSDAY [44-321]

Pat & I spent the morn at the Louvre. Lunch at a small Café behind the Rue de Rivoli. Saw the Place de la Concord, Eiffel Tower up which Pat went, Chambre des députés, Trocadero, Madeleine, &  Nótre Dame

Wrote to May.

 

Saint Lô               14 FRIDAY [45-320] 8hm 34m A. M. (Greenwich). Ember Day

Got up at 6 · a. m. & went by 7 · 53 A. M. train from the Gare de St. Lazare via Lison to St Lô. M. Morin & a young pupil called Broad met us at the station. After tea, we went for a walk round the town.

Listened to Pat’s first lesson with M. Morin. Signed, Broad witnessing, Bredin’s purchase agreement, & sent it by registered letter to Rooke. Wrote to May & Fran.

Morn. service at  M. Morin’s church (i.e. a hall)  Pat & Broad, & I went to see a football match aft. Wrote to Lou.

Saw the cathedral morn. & strolled round the town.

Went for a country walk aft.

Took a turn in the town morn. & saw the church of St. Croix.

M. Morin, Pat, Broad & I went to see the Haras (stud) aft.

Left Saint Lô by the 2 · 22 P. M. train for Lisou & Cherbourg

Dined at the Hotel de France at Cherbourg & left by the London & North Western steamer of 261 tons at 11 · P. M. Heavy sea, much pain during the night from indigestion

Got to Southampton about 6 · 30 a.m. Took the 9 · 36 a.m. train for Christchurch. Rested most of the day. Capt. Somerset Late R. N. called. Saw about a case for Pat’s bicycle.

Went with Edith & Yvonne Pendavis and to a Kinema show of Victor Hugo’s Les• Miserables. Saw about getting my bullock trunk mended etc.

Wrote to May, Ralph, & Low. Went with Fran to a concert at the Winter Gardens & heard “Melsa” a young violinist.

Went to the station with Edith & Fran. To see about trains for Saturday. Feeling seedy I went home. Strolled up the Headland aft. Concert even with Fran at the Winter Gardens.

Morn. Service with Lou. Wrote to May, Gamage, Ralph, Edith & Booth (about a motor boat).

 Saw Mrs. Dickenson morn. She described how her husband had tried to murder her. Lou & I went aft. by motor bus to Rottingdene & called on Sir Guy Campbell but his house was let. Walked over the down & had a long chat with Emily Cante & Roedene School. Backed by motor bus. Wrote to May etc.

Took the 10 · 19 a. m. train from Hove & travelled a good part of the way with Gen. Chapman & his wife & her sister  Got here 4 · 19 P. M. Went round to see Vida & Joyce.

Philharmonic Concert in the Town Hall even.

Strolled to Lechhampton morn. Congratulated May on her 45th. birthday by P. C. T with Bessie & some other Ladies at the Town Hall where the town orchestra was playing. Mlle. Murcciani & a girlfriend (Yvonne–from  Cherbourg spent the evening

Saw Capt Shortland R. N. at the Club morn. Went to see Vida aft. Bessie & Miss Raynes went even. to a discussion on Womens suffrage. Went aft to see the children at the College gymnasium.

Went to see my new boat, which Atkinson is building. Unpacked & did a few odd jobs.

Went to Dublin by 12 · 11 P. M. train for shopping & to see Rooke on Trustee business. Left my watch at Panton’s 25 St. Andrew St.

Home by 5 · 15 P. M. train. New cook Bridget Burns came.

Took Pat’s fret work machine to pieces etc. Wrote to him & to Ralph & Low. Also wrote about Pat’s joining a Cycle Touring Club in order to clear his bicycle from Cherbourg. Saw my boat & went on to the club.

Did a lot of odd jobs. Went to Dublin by 2 · P.  M & had a tooth stopped etc by Murray  Home by 5 · 15 P. M. train & went in again with May to some theatricals at the Arts Club

Minnie left early in the morning. Got up after breakfast and went to see my boat. Saw about sending off Pat’s tools. Stayed in the rest of the day. May to Dublin for shopping etc.

Got up after breakfast. Wrote to Rooke in re a letter of theirs which May had just found (Date  Feb 3rd.) also to Pat about going to the  Bizardels at Cherbourge. Slept badly

Pat’s first letter in French came to May–wrote to him in return in French. Made a brass nut for my military bed. The Cramptons called

Odd jobs. Went to my boat & the club.

Wrote to my mother.  May to Dublin. Went to my boat.

Musical afternoon with May at the Blair Whites

Wet day. Called with May at the Locke’s. Went to an entertainment at the central Hall got up by the Arts Club, after dining at the Red Bank. The show was so poor that we left early & came home

Went to my boat aft. Madge Saunders brought Laila’s picture but took it away to have the frame altered. Mrs. Hines, & Mrs. & Miss Rambault called.

Wet day. Cleaned brass etc. Club aft.

Worked morn & aft at getting the exhaust & water pipes out of my boat–a very hard job.

Stayed at home & did a few odd jobs. Mr Kerr called

Teddie has been unwell for several days & unable to go to school.

Laila not well. She got all right by evening. The Lockes drove as to Call on the Cramptons at St. Valerie. Locke witnessed a purchase agreement for me. Posted it on the way to Bray.

Made a Key for the padlock of my boat, & then found the one that was lost. May & I went aft to the boat. Dined with the Grönes. Dorothy Ross & her father were the other guests.

Did some odd jobs & went to my boat. Nearly sleepless night from coughing.

Wrote in french to M. Morin. Waited till 3 P.M for Brown the Plumber to come & mend the dining room bell; as he did not come, went to the boat. Shot a cat that was caught in a trap set by the larder window.

Worked with Brown (Plumber) at the dining room bell. Finding the tube was blocked, we closed the flange of the old hole & began to put it in an electric bell. B. Went away at dinner time, and did not turn up again. Made a bracket for the Kitchen towel.

On trying to get away, the engine refused to start. Had to anchor outside & finally to be towed home. Just off the pier the engine started. Very stiff & tired.

May & Vera went to the band, & I was called to open the eccentric Miss Lecky’s bedroom door, which she had locked & had forgotten to bring the key from  Kinstown. I did it easily.

Lunch at the club. Started to go to Dublin by boat with Harrie R., But about half way across, the set screw of my propeller shaft gave way, & the shaft came uncoupled. We rowed into the harbour when Capt. Fleming of the Alexandra towed me home & Powel screwed the shaft on to the coupling. Took home the set screw to alter.

Put a window catch in the kitchen morn.

Drilled a socket for the set screw of my propeller shaft. Called at the Alexandra to thank Capt. Fleming. Went for a run aft. to test my repair. Went to Dublin by 4 · 25 P. M. train saw Maguire and Gatshell about pumps. Joined May & Harrie at the Theatre Royal and went to the hippodrome to hear Albert Chevalier etc.  Home by 8 · 45 P. M train. Miss Good left.

Luggage nearly left behind owing to the stupidity of the hotel people. Pat went to Les Paliers & I put up at the Hotel de L’ Univers.
