1st Month
JANUARY 1921

The
New Year finds me at Bingfield in fairly good health, in spite of having been
ruptured last May, probably by starting the pumping engine. I am very badly off
indeed for money owing to a bad season & the failure to sell my flax crop.
Pat is farming in New Zealand Ralph
has got a job in jute in India, Teddie in the Indian Cavalry, Basil staying
with Vida before sailing for N.Z in February. Vera at the Alexandra College in
Dublin, & Laila with a Mrs. Thomson at Warren Point, being educated with
her girl. May is in pretty good health. We shall have been 25 years married
next month

but found there was none.
Fell lame on the way home.

Fine after a very wet night. Basil
came home. Mr. Reid called for me to sign some affidavits. Fitted iron to a pig
trough.
May & Vera went to a small aft.

Fine. Vera & Basil went to a
small dance at Blackleys. I went to Kevilt to get my Ret. Pay Voucher signed,
but Dr. Smith was out.
Began teaching Basil to turn iron.

Fine. Ploughing begun on JennyÕs
hill. The children went to a party in Cavan. Signed ret pay voucher before Dr. Smith.

mill. Basil, Brady & I ferreted but only caught one rabbit & dug out
one. Saw in the Irish Times a notice of the death of Sheila Falls (White King)
yesterday in a nursing home in Dublin Ð she had a son a few days ago.

Heard from Evie that he is going to
sell out & leave the country owing to financial difficulties. Wrote to him.

field. Basil & I glazed some windows in the greenhouse & potting shed.

Draining finished. Large numbers of police passing in lorries. Brady caught
young Mc. Kernan poaching Ð Confiscated his ferret & gave him a good at
telling off.

back lawn. Basil went to Cavan & reported on returning that the mail train
had been held up & Belfast goods thrown into the river Annalee.

of good behaviour.

Basil left by the early train for
Dalkey preliminary to his sailing on Friday for New Zealand. Brady tried to buy
cattle, but failed. Four pigs killed. Did some repairs to mangers in the
stable.

Annie Hamilton & Miss Stewart came about a missing horse rug.

Clements of Rathkenny was held up by an ambush at Drung. Ploughing in
Monery until rain stopped it. Brady went to Belturbet to buy cattle.

on Accidia a word which puzzled me in Thos. Aquinas.

down the furniture for thursdayÕs auction. Repaired part of a wardrobe & fitted
a key to VeraÕs trunk etc.

oats ground etc. Did some repairs to furniture for sale, & fitted a new arm
to my fret machine.

MenÕs
potatoes put in. Plumbers came
& mended a leak in the hot water pipe from the kitchen boiler. We put up
the Carbonater, but the reducing valve burst & made a dent in the ceiling.
Packed it to send to Murray. Finished my fret saw.

the yard. Mrs. Halpin & Mrs. Gordon & Dick Halpin to tea. Halpin Sen. came later on

all day at the cold water tap by the sink & fitted a new top half &
connecting nipple to it. Mrs. TaylorÕs children came to play with Laila.

Telegram
from Teddie saying he sailed for Liverpool from Bombay on the 20th.
Drove into Cavan on business. Was informed that the Midland to Tnny
Junction
was closed by military order because the goods train had been raided every
night for a month. Louis Smith told me that some of my raided things had been
burnt in a house near Ballinanagh (probably fired by police), but that some
things wd. be given back, when a man dared to come to Cavan with them.
Helped
to put a handle into a spade.

about trains at the station. Got the ivy on the stables cut at the top &
runners removed etc.

& Laila went to Armagh by the 6.35 a.m. train. Ground being prepared for
mangolds. Made a chicken run out of a bicycle crate.

Hedge
cutting in Glouds field. Put up the new reducing valve for the Carbonater. Got
Rob. Hoonan to climb a tree in Farnadaly for some young hawks, but he did not
find them. Heard from & wrote to Teddie to Malta & to Murray thanking
him for the valve.

Rathkenny had died suddenly

at CoravahanÑJohn Madden of Hilton & Henry Leslie were there. Interesting
talk with them. Heard from Tissington Tatlow about the possibility of our
leaving here.
