1st  Month                                           JANUARY 1921                              31  Days

 

The New Year finds me at Bingfield in fairly good health, in spite of having been ruptured last May, probably by starting the pumping engine. I am very badly off indeed for money owing to a bad season & the failure to sell my flax crop. Pat is farming in New Zealand  Ralph has got a job in jute in India, Teddie in the Indian Cavalry, Basil staying with Vida before sailing for N.Z in February. Vera at the Alexandra College in Dublin, & Laila with a Mrs. Thomson at Warren Point, being educated with her girl. May is in pretty good health. We shall have been 25 years married next month

                                              Bank Holiday, Scotland. Holiday, Stock Exchange

Went to Kilmore for 8 a.m. service, but found there was none.

Fell lame on the way home.

Quiet day at home. Wrote to Teddie.

                                             Quarter Sessions Week

Wet. Oates being cleaned & flax sent to the mill. Put a perch into the fowls house.

Fine after a very wet night. Basil came home. Mr. Reid called for me to sign some affidavits. Fitted iron to a pig trough.

May & Vera went to a small aft. dance at Farnham.

Fine. Vera & Basil went to a small dance at Blackleys. I went to Kevilt to get my Ret. Pay Voucher signed, but Dr. Smith was out.

Began teaching Basil to turn iron.

Fine. Ploughing begun on JennyÕs hill. The children went to a party in Cavan. Signed  ret pay voucher before Dr. Smith.

Fine with showers. Ploughing on JennyÕs hill. Worked with Brady & Hoey at opening a drain in the front lawn. Letter from mother.

The children went to a party at Kevilt.

Wet nearly all day. Men cutting firewood. Basil & Vera went to Badminton in Cavan. Dr. Smith examined LailaÕs eyes.

Vera & Basil to church. Quiet day. Gloomy & damp.

                                             Peace Treaty with Germany ratified 1920

Wet morn. Drove into Cavan & saw Halpin about a loan for cattle etc. Wrote to Evie about it. Vera went to Dublin to school.

                                                            Hillary Law Sittings begin

Wet. Worked at accounts & at turning a shaft for Dr. Smiths car.

Men cleaning the yard etc. Got another ferret.

Wet. Flax sent to the mill & tow brought back. Men cleaning the yard

Finished & sent off the shaft for Dr. Smith.

Fine & sunny. Flax sent to the mill. Basil, Brady & I ferreted but only caught one rabbit & dug out one. Saw in the Irish Times a notice of the death of Sheila Falls (White King) yesterday in a nursing home in Dublin Ð she had a son a few days ago.

Stormy Ð a large pane blown out of the greenhouse. Galligan ploughing, the rest stubbing bushes in Farnadaly.

Ploughing etc. On duty when the whole family went to the Kilmore sale. Wrote to McDonnell of Twyford School from whom I had heard.

Heard from Evie that he is going to sell out & leave the country owing to financial difficulties. Wrote to him.

Potatoes being gathered in from the field. Basil & I glazed some windows in the greenhouse & potting shed. Mrs. Taylor & three children to tea.

Drove to Cavan & saw Halpin etc. Wrote to my mother to ask her to help me to raise money for stock.

Wrote to Charlie enclosing the letter written yesterday to my mother. Also to Capt. Pullinger. Ploughing etc. Fine & warm. Sharpened & set saws etc.

Men snedding turnips. Basil took Laila to Armagh on the way to Warren Point.

Muggy & damp. Potatoes put into sprouting boxes etc.

Manure carting & fencing. May went to the Blackleys. Basil came back from Warren Point.

  Men gathering turnips etc. mended the window of the Coach house loft.

The Waggs went to Drumroe. Ploughing in Monery. Ferretted and got 2 rabbits. Mrs. Askins called

Wet. Ploughing in Monery. Sharpened and set a saw after a lot of house work.

Stormy. Ploughing in Monery & pass made for getting out timber. Worked at saws etc.

Men burning bushes (hedge cuttings) etc. Basil to Cavan. Heard from Charlie & my Mother that they cannot help me. Miss Moore called.

Cold. Ploughing & potatoe picking. Made a new base for the butter dish of beech.

Cold. Wet morn. I am rather lame. Set the cross-cut saw & helped Basil to cut down some holly. Wrote to Vida on her 40th birthday

Cold & frosty with some sun. Potatoe gathering & tree marking.

Cold & foggy. Timber auction. Our 25th wedding day.

Fixed the dairy door Ð i.e. planed the edge, & made a splash board for the engine tank. Wellwood came to see about Schedule A of the Income Tax on this place. Went to Lisnamandra to meet Eva Roe.

Milder. Ploughing & gathering cabbages & carrots. Repaired some harness & the latch of the front garden gate.

Milder. Wrote to Teddie on his passing an exam.

Stones being raised for a drain in the front lawn.

Still seedy, but a little better. Draining finished. Large numbers of police passing in lorries. Brady caught young Mc. Kernan poaching Ð Confiscated his ferret & gave him a good at telling off.

Firewood being carted out of the back lawn. Basil went to Cavan & reported on returning that the mail train had been held up & Belfast goods thrown into the river Annalee.

Only Basil to church. Wrote to Teddie. Young Mc. Kernan came & I gave him back his ferret, on his promise of good behaviour.

Basil left by the early train for Dalkey preliminary to his sailing on Friday for New Zealand. Brady tried to buy cattle, but failed. Four pigs killed. Did some repairs to mangers in the stable.

Turnips & Potatoes sent to Cavan market. Called at Dr. SmithÕs to get a lift for the assizes. Annie Hamilton & Miss Stewart came about a missing horse rug.

Manure carting etc. Not very well. A little snow.

Dr. Smith drove me to the assizes & Scott brought me home. Clements of Rathkenny was held up by an ambush at Drung. Ploughing in Monery until rain stopped it. Brady went to Belturbet to buy cattle.

Warmer. Mended my busby case. The small door of the archway loft, &

buied my big lathe chuck. Mr. Askins called with a book containing an essay by Paget, Bishop of Oxford, on Accidia a word which puzzled me in Thos. Aquinas.

Burnett, the dentist came & fixed my false teeth.

Wet. Worked at diamond drills. The new Carbonater arrived.

Heard that the Stores bread van was burned on Wed. last near Cavan Station by Sinn Feinners. Heard that Vera has influenza.

Damp & muggy Ð neither of us to church.

Heard from & wrote to J. B. about my investments. Also to Murray & the Sparklet people about the Carbonater.

Chain harrow work on the lawn & front lawn & sticks being collected. Not very well with indigestion.

Fine. Horses shod etc. Still troubled with indigestion.

Still seedy. The tax collector threatens a distraint. Wrote to say that my farm appeal is in the hands of the Inspector of Taxes.

Gave Galligan a monthÕs notice, as I cannot keep as many men.

Cleaned the magneto of the pumping engine. Brady & I repaired & put up the chicken house. Stopped a leak in a water barrel.

 

                        Brought up to the potatoe house a turkey & 13 eggs from Lower Garden.

Ploughing in Monery for potatoes. Began mending my fret machine. The rest went to Danesport.

May & Vera to church. Wrote to the Secretary of the Land Commission

Got down the furniture for thursdayÕs auction. Repaired part of a wardrobe & fitted a key to VeraÕs trunk etc.

Rolling oats ground etc. Did some repairs to furniture for sale, & fitted a new arm to my fret machine.

MenÕs potatoes put in.  Plumbers came & mended a leak in the hot water pipe from the kitchen boiler. We put up the Carbonater, but the reducing valve burst & made a dent in the ceiling. Packed it to send to Murray. Finished my fret saw.

Cold & sunny with hail & snow showers. Auction of some old furniture held in the yard. Mrs. Halpin & Mrs. Gordon & Dick  Halpin to tea. Halpin Sen. came later on a bicycle.

Potatoe planting. Cold day. Heard that my mother is ill.

Wrote to Charlie about my going over.

Warmer & sunny. Manure carting. Found that a sitting turkey had been killed, probably by a fox

Wet. The turkey sitting in the Bellgrove Killed during the night.

Worked all day at the cold water tap by the sink & fitted a new top half & connecting nipple to it. Mrs. TaylorÕs children came to play with Laila.

Sunny & warmer. Fitted a top to a tap. Potatoe planting. No trains running on the

M.G.W.R. Cox went to Cavan to enquire about it, & about trains on the G.N.R. Wrote to Ralph.

Warm & sunny. May to church. Wrote to White King & Tissington Tatlow.

Telegram from Teddie saying he sailed for Liverpool from Bombay on the 20th. Drove into Cavan on business. Was informed that the Midland to Tnny

Junction was closed by military order because the goods train had been raided every night for a month. Louis Smith told me that some of my raided things had been burnt in a house near Ballinanagh (probably fired by police), but that some things wd. be given back, when a man dared to come to Cavan with them.

Helped to put a handle into a spade.

Enquired about trains at the station. Got the ivy on the stables cut at the top & runners removed etc.

May & Laila went to Armagh by the 6.35 a.m. train. Ground being prepared for mangolds. Made a chicken run out of a bicycle crate.

Hedge cutting in Glouds field. Put up the new reducing valve for the Carbonater. Got Rob. Hoonan to climb a tree in Farnadaly for some young hawks, but he did not find them. Heard from & wrote to Teddie to Malta & to Murray thanking him for the valve.

Brady to Cavan for medicine for a sick calf. Heard that Mrs. Clements, formerly of Rathkenny had died suddenly

Drove to Coravahan & attended Mrs. ClementÕs funeral.

Lunch at CoravahanÑJohn Madden of Hilton & Henry Leslie were there. Interesting talk with them. Heard from Tissington Tatlow about the possibility of our leaving here.

Very hot. Made out a return for Inspector of Taxes. Wrote to White King & send him an extract from the story of Dilla , & a letter also written some days ago. Sent TissingtonÕs letter to Charlie.

May has a bad cold. Mangolds being sown. Cleaned brass etc.
