In bed–

The New Year finds me at Dalkey with an income reduced to barely Ł300 a year. Very ill–I hope only pro tem. Pat on his way home from France, Ralph at Bessies with Vera, & the others with us.

A good deal better, but in bed all day. Wright came.

Still improving, but much insomnia. In bed.

Got up after breakfast & did accounts etc. White King to see me.

Up after breakfast. Worked at a military scheme for White King & a lot of accounts. Wrote to Morin & Ralph.

Breakfast downstairs, & bath after. Did accounts etc

Bath after breakfast, as I had slept badly. Cleaned brass with Magan, & some other odd jobs.

Busy in various ways about the house. May up for a little.

Took my german cornet to be repaired, & left my baritone for sale at McNeils. Council Dinner (after R. S. D. recital) of Engineering Assn. President Miller gave his address

Odd jobs. Wrote to Mother, from whom I had heard, & to Evie.

Pat arrived from Cheltenham in time for breakfast. Odd jobs in my workshop most of the day.

Nurse left, & also Eva. Took Pat toDublin to see Archer

Had a tooth stopped. Saw Hallway about the sale of my boat.

Pat & I took the 3.11 P. M. Train & came here. Slept well.

Pat & I went round the place morn. to see the timber cutting etc.

Ferreted for 11/2 hours after lunch & shot 8 rabbits (Pat 3 & I 5)

Watched Pat ferreting. He got 4 Rabbits.

Dr. Hallowes to see me. Dr. Sidley came to lunch & left by the afternoon train. Called on the Burrowes, but they were all away.

Went round the place with Smith to see about masons work etc

Ferreted aft & shot 2 rabbits & 2 rats. Flushed the hot water apparatus etc.

May, Laila, & I left in heavy rain by mid day train & came home.

Set to work at once to put various things straight. About dinner time Bride (our new H. P. maid) had a telegram to say an aunt was dead.

Pulled down part of the Kitchen range to get out a toasting fork dropped by the sweep–a hard job–painted a basin, cleaned my lathe etc, etc. Took Laila out aft. Bride went home.

Went to Dublin by tram & saw Rooke on business. Pat & I lunched at the Empire restaurant. Saw Pigott about a piano. R. D. S recital. Home by new rule 5.15 P. M. train. Began our music after dinner, which had been so long neglected.

Odd jobs in my workshop etc. Pigott’s man called & arranged to exchange our piano for a Bechstein & Ł42.10 .0 cash.

Brown the plumber took down the Neptune gas heater & & dismantled it. Morton’s man (Sullivan) came to value the plate.

Took the castings of the Neptune to Dublin, saw Pat, got tickets for Saturday’s matuisé at the Gaiety Theatre etc.

Morn service. Went to the Frasers aft. with May & Laila.

Petit Sessions at Ballinanagh new Court House morn.

Waited in for Dillon aft., but he never came.

Attended the assizes morn. Judge Ross took the criminal court. Lunch with Maxwell Greene the High Sheriff. Burrowes drove me home. Did a couple of odd jobs.

Cut ivy on several trees. Cleared round the juniper’s on the drive, & topped them.

Morning service. Burrowes & Scott came over aft to see the place with a view to its defence in case of civil war.

Wrote to King. Cut some laurels etc. Strolled down to Cross-doney

Wet nearly all day. Tidied the coach house & got in the mowing machine to put it in order. May sent on a letter from Carrie about Pat’s chances in New Zealand.

Lougheed came to work, & fixed the library window & the potting shed & began to work on the Green House. Athill (curate) called.

Waited for Lougheed, but he did not come. Snow at intervals

Wrote to Ralph. Accounts etc.

Loughhead came & went on with the green house, pantry table, mowing machine, bath mat etc. Helped Taylor to shift the Large beech stump etc etc. & tidied up my workshop.

Lougheed took down the Kitchen coal cellar door for repairs etc

Worked at cleaning up the place generally.

Lougheed eased the drawing room door, & worked at the Green house etc. I cleared ivy off the old Laundry wall, etc & called on Atthill (curate) (out).

Cleaned spouting in the Haggard & cleared up the Potting shed etc etc.

 

              Paid W. Lougheed Ł 1 on account.

 

Bingfield & Dalkey      25 WEDNESDAY [84-281] Annunciation. Lady Day.                                                                                          Quarter Day

Took the 1 · 45 P. M. train with Mrs. Wagg & came home. Found Teddie in bed with measles & Laila with hooping cough–both slight attacks

 

Mount Salus                  26 THURSDAY [85-280] ˜ 68 9m P.M. (Greenwich)

Went to Dublin with May & got a wedding present for Capt. O’Rorke Punjab Cavalry. Saw the Gas Co. about the parts of the Neptune & Booth about a pump for Bingfield & J. B. about Mrs. Wagg’s operation. Found Pat at lunch.

Home by 3 · 45 P. M. train. Altered the Drawing Room furniture.

 

Mount Salus                  27 FRIDAY [86-279] Cambridge Lent Term ends

Mrs. Wagg went in to Dublin with Pat to have her nose operated on

Mended May’s bedroom chair etc. Went down to my boat to see about getting her ready. Mrs. Wagg came back about 8 · 30 P. M. after the Hospital people had by telephone and informed me she had never been there. She had been duly operated on at the Hospital for all that.

Took the 1 · 18 P. M. Train & went to the Wedding of Capt. J. O’Rorke Puns and Frontier Force to Miss Violet Heley at St. Patricks Cathedral. A cheery gathering at Oakland, Ratugar afterwards. The Toppins motored me home in heavy rain.

Showed Mrs. Wagg about the place, & took her to even service.

Went up to Dublin by 11 · 11 A. M. train. Took two hand candlesticks to be valued, & some electric gear to be repaired

Saw Dr. Graham about Mrs. Wagg at the Royal Victoria Hospital. We joined Pat at lunch. Mrs. W. & I went to a picture house, did some shopping, train to Kingstown saw Powell about my moorings & Dick Atkinson about my boat.

Stayed at home, & did a lot of jobs for the house.

Brought Mrs. Wagg from the Hospital where she had been operated on again. Shewed her Ship St. Barracks & the Castle

Joined Pat at Lunch. Train to Kingstown. Got films for my camera etc. Saw my boat & left a clock to be cleaned. Saw Piggott in Dublin about the piano & Yeates about electric apparatus.

Mrs. Wagg left. Piggotts man fixed the piano desk & scouces

Hunt called. Worked at electric apparatus.

 

Mount Salus                  4 SATURDAY [94-271] Oxford Lent Term ends

House-parlour maid who came on Thursday said she wished to Leave on monday–objects to early rising–told her to leave at 4 · P. M. today. Later on we came to an arrangement for her to stay on pro tem.

Saw my boat, & ran the engine. Lunch at the club.

Morn. service. Wrote to Morin. Choir practice even.

Wright says Laila has measles–a very slight attack. Heavy hail showers. Saw my boat. Paid bills etc. May went to a committee meeting of the tennis club even.

Saw my boat, and jobs about the place. Pat came home early from Dublin seedy.

Wright says Pat has measles. Odd jobs.

Went to registry offices & got a Cook–general servant. Saw my boat & Lunched at the club. The H. P. maid (Annie Harrison) left.

Morn. service. Made iron slats for one of the servant’s beds

Cook (Maggie Kinsella) left & a new one came.

Saw my boat.

Got my boat launched & took her round to the Yacht Club. Lunched there. Pat able to be up for a little. Laila also, but very cross.

Morn, & even service & H. C. at 8 · 30 a.m. Had to sing a solo in the Anthem even.

Odd jobs about the house. Had a run in my boat to Killiney Bay. Heavy hail storms. The engine ran very well.

Worked in my workshop most of the day at Pats Carpenter’s bench etc  Glued a piece of the piano. Mrs. Rootham called.

 

Mount Salus                  15 WEDNESDAY [105-260] Oxford Easter Term begins

Went for a run in the “Laila” to Howtts. Teddie & Basil went to Bingfield.

Booth’s man (Kirk) came & took out the reversing gear of my boat to be re-bushed. Dined in town & saw Burke & Cos, bottle works at Rings end.

 Wrote to Aunt Carrie to ask her to take in Ralph. Took the 5 P. M. train from Broadstone to Cross-doney. Found Teddie & Basil very well.

 

Bingfield             18 SATURDAY [108-257] Cambridge Easter Term begins

Went around the place. Mended the wire of the w.c. valve. Blasted the stump of a beech tree. The auger broke when Smith was putting a handle into it. Saw Magee about his jobs etc.

Morn. service at Kilmore. Quiet day.

Lougheed fixed the door leading to the back stairs etc. Tried to get water pumped from Back Lawn well, but failed.

 Saw Mrs. Moore about it, but she cd. give no information.

 

Bingfield                       21 TUESDAY [11-254] Easter Law Sittings begin

Traced the delivery pipe from Back Lawn well, & found it broken near the old dairy. Set it in cement. Lougheed put new rungs into a ladder etc.

 

Shot 1 Rabbit.

Got the pump to work, & put in about 250 gallons of water.

Cleaned the bronze ornament of the drawing room grate

May, Pat, & Laila came via the even train. Answered the enquiries about my boat.

Morris (Plumber) came to fix the two pumps. Took the 1 · 45 P. M. train for Dalkey. Saw Baty at Booths about my proposed water supply at Bingfield.

Went to Dublin by 3 · 11. P. M. train and got an awning for Bingfield front door etc. Engineering lecture even. on fire prevention.

Wrote a long letter to May about one of Pats from St. Lô that I found lying about. Odd jobs etc.

Got Brown the plumber to put up the Neptune, found it work all right. At home all day.

Went to Dublin & got the reversing gear of my boat put together. Booth’s man fitted it in aft. Went for a run, but found it work badly. Maybe, Lailac, Pat, Basil, & Teddie came home from Bingfield.

Went to the club morn & got my boat engine to run better.

Mr. Shelton from Howth came to see her–took him for a run.

Walked to Saggart Paper Mills & were shewn over them. Walked back to Jobs town partly over fields & so home by tram & train at 8 · 30 P. M.

I went by train to Cavan with the luggage & saw them off. Arranged Pat’s books in the bureau etc on my return. Saw Meikele at Xdoney & Pollock in Cavan & asked them to look out for a man in Smith’s place.

Wrote to Charlie in the evening.

The pump & pipe came. Sounds old heavy firing all day from the S. W. Caused a German scare in Cavan. It turned out to be some military manoeuvres at Longford.

Found that my new pump & one of the pipes were cracked by the frost & that the donkey pump had a valve broken. Made a new valve for the latter & took the pump to pieces. Sent the pipe into Cavan by Smith, but could not get another.
