Eldest son of Joseph and Caroline Story of Bingfield, County Cavan. Born in Edinburgh where his father practised as a barrister. When he was still young, he moved with his parents to the family estate in County Cavan, Ireland. This place was called Bingfield after the property of the same name near Hexham from which the family had originated. He had eight younger siblings: Oswald, Louisa, Edward, Arthur, Francis, Evelyn, Charlotte and Florence. In the manner of their time they all shortened their names ( except Arthur ) to Bob, Oz, Lou, Ted, Fran, Evie, Charlie and Florie.

After lessons at home with his mother Caroline (nee Reed) or a governess, Robert went to Twyford Prep School near Winchester. In the summer term of 1869 he entered Harrow.

On leaving school in 1873 he briefly attended a 'crammer' in Sunbury in order to pass his entrance exams for the army. Later that same year he obtained a commission in the Hampshire Yeomanry (60th Foot), transferring after three years to the 60th rifles, the Kings Royal Rifle Corps.

He married Florence Mansfield Bush of Bradford-on-Avon and they had one child:

  • Vida Hope Carmichael. Born 1887.

    Robert went to India with his Regiment. There he became intensely interested in the peoples and their languages; he studied Hindustani, Persian and Arabic all the rest of his life. So he transferred to the 8th Bengal Cavalry, later renamed the 8th Cavalry I.A. His Regiment went to the second Afghan War in 1878. He suffered an attack of erysipelas and Spinal Meningitis, He was lucky to survive that illness after a long convalescence.

    After their daughter was born Florence Emily became very ill and eventually died of cancer of the breast. Robert resigned his commission on account of his ill-health. Went to New Zealand with his naval brother Oswald who was in command of HMS Opal. On his return to England by sailing vessel he met Mary Jollie, one of the daughters of Edward Jollie of Patea, New Zealand. In 1896 they were married at Patea and sailed for the United Kingdom. Robert's mother gave him Bingfield where they settled down and had five children. The sixth child was born when they moved to Dalkey, Co. Dublin. Robert was High Sheriff of the County of Cavan and was on the Magistrate's bench for many years.

  • 1911. Laila Mary. Born Mount Salus, Dalkey. July 18.

    Robert died in 1924 and is buried in Dublin.
