Arthur Patrick Story.

Letter to Daisy from NZ Mounted Rifles

My own darling one. X-X-X-
got your dear letter of Wednesday today. Very many thanks. Very cold today. We did some "field craft" with the S.M. Worker but it got so cold & a shower came on so we rushed to the empty school & I talked on  "narrow neck" for an hour.

New orders came today, they want us up at 5.30 a.m. We have been getting up at 6 a.m. when it is quite dark. I am using one of these XXX lights, they are very good. It does not make too much noise & certainly warms the room!

I presume the "doctors thing" is a Postal Warrant from the Department of Health. I have one here, I believe you can cash them at P.O. I tried to today but forgot it was Saturday, one day being much the same as the next!  What you say of the photo of O. Lawson is quite true! Yes, the chocolate ad was rather good, especially as I had just given Binda that box, though her heels did not come up to scratch!! No dear one I have plenty of blankets and a whole XXX of unissued ones as beside me. I wonder if they have sent my year home from camp? I asked de Jautres to do so.

A XXX & 3 lengths of pipes. Match lining which wants putting under cover in the garage would do, drum of tar, tin of creosote, paint brushes, rat brush & creosote brush. XXX of 3 ply XXX in case, ½ are etc. The 3 ply especially wants putting in the dry, I wonder who "is my heir"?  Ralph I imagine.

Sunday. Such a storm yesterday, straight into the bay. At 9 last night the water came onto the road, the wharf was nearly under water. The sea was breaking into the broken windows of the big bath house. This morning at 6 a.m.  we al went along the beach to see if we could find any firewood or planks etc. It certainly has been very wild. The wind was just about due east. This afternoon I walked round the point at low tide towards Auckland. Curious formations of the rocks. I climbed up onto the road & came back over the hill. King's birthday but it made no difference to us! We were working on the outpost.

What a terrific raid on Germany, 1000 planes! I see XXX has just about said motors will be all off the road about the end of the month! And all bus services are being cut down, so it is all going to be mighty hard on the country people.

Tuesday evening. We were going out on the horses this afternoon, but the rain came and the thunder etc. but it cleared again around 4 p.m.

It was so nice hearing your little voice tonight dearest one. But ringing you via Auckland makes you very faint! Very dark tonight. What a time Cologne has had!

Must stop, hoping to see you soon again.

Ever you loving husband
