Dr. Arthur Nevile Story
Arthur Nevile Story (1864 - 1894)
| ![]() |
One of Col. Robert Story's brothers. He trained as a doctor in Edinburgh where he also became lawn tennis champion of Scotland. In 1891 he went to Bengal in India to take a practice looking after the tea plantation residents and workers. He travelled between the tea gardens that he looked after on horseback and by elephant on very rough roads and lived in very primitive conditions. He suffered considerably from malaria and describes the climate there as awful but enjoyed the life in India. He lived at a small place called Nagrakata, the nearest town is Jalpaiguri some distance away, and played cricket and polo during the 'cold' season.
In November 1895 while visiting one of his tea Gardens he was taken ill and died of fever together with a long term heart condition. The notice in the paper reads:
Story.- At Telepara Tea Estate, Duars on the 27th November, Dr. A.N.J. Story. Deeply regretted by his many friends in the district.
His death certificate was signed by a tea planter who died himself three days later. More details may be found at the Oriental and India Collections of The British Library (oioc-equiries@bl.uk). He is buried in the cemetary at Jalpaiguri.
Terence Story has a silver and wood mug with a shield on it engraved "1886 GALA LTC, OPEN SINGLES, 1st PRIZE, WON BY A.N.J. Story"
