My dear Pat
I regret to say that George my son was killed on active service on July 23rd. He went out on a convoy as major in XX Kings Royal Regiment. They were attacked by E-boats submarines and both German & Italian planes. The battle lasted 4 hours when enemy retreated beaten. HMS Fearless was lost and there were many casualties. No details as yet to hand but the battle was great enough to call for a special BBC message from the 1st Lord of the Admiralty. News is hard to come by and the War Office letter confirming the wire (we got) was was long in coming as George was in the officer's role as an Engineer Officer. I fear that there is no hope as he was reported as " died of wounds caused by enemy action at sea" That means he was found wounded and taken care of by people who knew who he was and died afterwards. If he had been posted as missing he might turn up but definitely he was not. We are now in rather a fix as we can't show any Certificate of death and we don't know where his unit finally went to.
We have been here since 1940 (May) as refugees from Hythe. My house there still stands & has been repaired but Hythe suffered a good deal. This is George's home and his poor little wife is here broken hearted and well she may be as George was a very fine man and drawing a big income from the Brewery. We now know that a seat on the board was waiting his safe return. I can't say more as I really don't know but news will reach a us slowly when we know where the King's Royal Regiment is.
His death will make a very material difference for you later on with the Islington Property.
Hope you & your family are well
I am
Your affect.
