Arthur Patrick Story - Letter from brother Teddy. 1936

About their mother's death

Market street
Picton
Dec 6th 36.
My dear Pat
I sent you a wire yesterday of the very sad news of mummy's death - it was very sudden & very peaceful after tea on Friday evening.  I got up from the table & went over to the wireless set when Mrs. Jordan suddenly called out that mummy was ill.  She had collapsed sitting in her chair, so we moved her to the sofa but her breath had stopped.  However I phoned a doctor at once & some ladies opposite came in to help.  The doctor tried everything but it was no good & she had died of simple heart failure without any pain or suffering at 6:15 PM.
Well I phoned V & L & Basil came down & we managed to hold the funeral yesterday at 4:30 PM, which could give V & L time to arrive by plane.  Next morning I was up at 6:00 AM & picked a nice situation for the grave & was generally busy until lunchtime when V & L arrived from Blenheim.  Basil fetched them in Kenny's car & Aunt Sallia(?) came a little later.

The funeral was quite simple & or over in an hour & we got back here for tea with just us & a few of mummy's friends.  Such a lot of beautiful wreathes were sent & everybody was most kind & helpful.  I am only sorry the V(?) had gone to Chch to see friends for a fortnight - but M had been so well & happy - on Thursday she was at a garden party & brought us back strawberries & cream.

On Friday I got some trunks for her & she had been looking at old photos & then the evening paper depressed her with the news of the king's possible abdication.  But she laughed & joked about it at teatime & then it suddenly happened & I think she had passed away before I left the room.
She made her will last autumn leaving her estate between Ralph, Basil, V & Laila.  The £200 a year from Daddy's estate goes to you of course & I am now awaiting the November installment which is very late.  Perhaps they are doing something about the Income Tax.  I enclose a letter I found on the floor of her room!  This little house & effects & the land is left to me & Basil & I are trustees so some day this week we will go to Blenheim & interview the solicitors & get the business straightened out.  As soon as that cheque arrives I will send it on to you.
Well,  old man, I am sorry to write such bad news & I know you & Daisy will feel the loss.  I have many letters to write so will close.
Love to all
From
Teddy
