Arthur Patrick Story - letter to OC 1942
Asking for leave to tend the farm
ON ACTIVE SERVICE
Date 9 JUL 42
To O.C. no 2 Sqn
Sir
It is with regret I am applying for 21 days special Leave.
My second daughter Nancy has been taken ill with appendicitis in Wellington on June 30. My wife was called by telephone & has gone to Wellington. My wife states that the doctor says the child cannot travel for at least three weeks.
As my wife & Nancy aged 14 & my son aged 11 have been running the farm, it means the farm is unattended, except for a very temporary help of an aged couple who walk 2 miles twice a day to milk the cows already in, feed pigs etc. They cannot go on much longer. Three cows are roving with their calves, fences are down etc.. As you know I have been it nearly three months at Wainone(?) & have had a minimum of leave.
