My dear Pat
Many thanks for your letter of April 23rd which arrived today so I am answering at once to give you the news of Esther.  First many thanks indeed for the very Gaelic looking birth cert.  Having no country now I think the they should pay me double.  I see the mistake of 1 month has been duly rectified so it should be all right.
Altogether Esther spent about five months in hospital & came back no better.  They x-rayed & put her to bed & did nothing.  She came back home for Xmas & back again in a week badly crippled.  So they gave her physiotherapy & walking & other exercises with no improvement.  Next came the traction, flat on the back on a special torture bed,  feet held out & down by weights & head down the other end - no result so she ups & comes home.  Well the head Dr. is a psychiatrist & the next man knew less about bones, about the same level as our GP!  Then she goes to a chiropractor & I see his xray & he points out four slipped discs, spine out of place & some of the vertebrae growing together so you can imagine the pain & swellings.  The hospital treatment was all entirely wrong & far too harsh.  This condition has been coming on for a long time & began with a fall while nursing before we met.  After three months she can now walk erect, the pain has mostly gone & so has the swellings but it will take about a year to finally put things right.  Meanwhile we are both very thankful to have found someone who could help & nuts to the medical professionals who don't recognise these men!  What rot!  She can do a little gardening now & we got a spin washer & drier to help with the clothes - the same good meals are back on the table too!
Glad to hear the news, what a business about Bingfield - would you or could you let the house apart from the grazing?  I suppose in the end you will find some solution - have you any idea where you will settle when it is all over?  Somewhere between Torquay & Hove & keep an eye on young Pat!

No news here, Mrs Niblock is a wait for a few weeks with another daughter who has lately moved to Wanganui.  It was at her house I first met Esther!  So we are by ourselves after a good few years & nice it is too!  I had a little fun with a Tatts tickets, our syndicate (4 in it) won two prizes on the one ticket, odds in favour runs to millions, one £50 & one £5 so we each got about £14 & I sent you a cutting from the local rag.  Next time it will be the first prize & Esther & I will stay at the Farnham Arms & drive out by taxi to tea with Daisy while you are visiting Nancy & family!  Hope David is OK nasty things those scooters, one of our girl staff bashed a car and split her leg.
Had a letter from god daughter Katrina also one from Laila. K is now seven so I sent her a doll!  Basil's divorce is through & I believe Alice is living in Wellington somewhere with Terence. B is now studying TV & such!  Laila says Vera lives in a dreadful muddle!  No news of Ralph though I hear he is still with the taxes people.
Tell Nellie B???  To see a chiropractor if you have them there.  If he can do nothing he will say so - it sounds like she had gold injections which sometimes worked wonders.  Of course she's not too young is she?
Am still coping with the old boys at the home.  Am now the senior man & one of the longest there as they come and go so fast.  I believe Uncle Ted's wife died as an inmate.  My two weeks holiday comes soon & E & I hope to stay at the Esplanade Hotel in D-port - me in a new bespoke tailored suit and she in a fur coat, that'll wow them!
By the way I'm fat now - I believe I weigh 13-8 not long ago I was 11-7 well dig that middle aged spread!
Love to you all from
Us both.
