Caroline Orsmond



Caroline Armstrong Orsmond, born 1836 in Tahiti, daughter of missionary Rev. John Muggeridge
Orsmond and Mary Isabella Nelson. In 1843 at age 7 Caroline was sent to England to be educated
where she was taken charge of by a Mrs Cooper, the wife of a Quaker. While in England both her
father and mother died - her mother in Tahiti in 1856 & her father on voyage from Tahiti to
Sydney in 1857. In 1858, Caroline was invited to stay with her aunt and uncle (Mr and Mrs
Shepherd) at Whangaroa near the Bay of Islands. In 1859 Caroline went to Auckland and while
there met Edward Jollie. They married 14/5/1861 at St. Pauls church Parnell, Auckland by Dr
Selwyn, Bishop of New Zealand. They spent three weeks honeymoon at Howick, then shifted to
Christchurch where they bought 1200 acres calling it 'Beachcroft' estate. In Dec 1861 Edward
and Caroline sailed to England for 1 years visit to meet Edward's family in Gateshead. Their
first child, Margaret, was born in London on 11/5/1862. On leaving England they returned to Beachcroft
where they raised the remainder of their family.

In 1877 Caroline, Edward, their eight chidren and a maid left for England and Europe on a trip that was to last
nine years. When the family returned to NZ they moved to the North Island. Their new home was called Waireka located near Patea,
Taranaki.
