Some notes rather than a letter I think (MDW). Talking about the severe state of finances on the dairy farm at Ohaupo. Probably around 1930.
Original Original price £3480 reduced to £2080 with butterfat @ 1/6. XXX butterfat now a little over 9d so the farm is only worth half. The Place last season will bring in about £300 gross: Dept. gets £100 leaving me with about £200 to run whole show.
The whole place is going back fast because I have
(1) run at the whole show a loan for over 12 months
(2) cannot cut blackberries
(3) no money for manure
(4) grass for seven acres fallow for two years now
(5) time lost pumping by hand for want of 100ft piping & trough
(6) no posts, difficulty in managing stock, so cutting shelter trees
(7) cowshed falling into bad state, want timber for foundations & rafters, built of white pine &pinus insignis
(8) sledge nearly done, water tanks that house going, manure shed going to pieces, set of new rubbers required, struggled through with perished ones. Separator requires a set of disks. Copper & tubs almost worn out also bath, even our clothes are getting short. Duty 27% on old clothes now.
I was offered a loan of £1650 but had to turn it down. The Dairy Co. say next year will be worse. Gordfellow reduced 12 months ago. Freling gone reducing from £90 to £45. Allan after 15 years. Walsh after much the same, Billesen after 11 years. Also N. Storey.
Some 2 years ago Bank Manager told me I was a fall to carry on but have still done so. Later under present conditions I should be better on relief works in town. Also until ½ dairy farmers walked off nothing would be done. Under English tenure Dept. would pay for improvements & Irish 7 years rent as compensation.
Over £100 lost in not getting rebate over eight years.
Rates unpaid only a week to go now before summons.
I am paying interest on Stone Hill. Must sell Life Policy.
Wished to buy more heiffers last year but they were very dear. XXX 30 chain of boundary flat. Only post required.
A pity I have had to abandon to blackberries 6 acres ploughed three times, blackberries originally crushed by tractor, also had 10 acres blackberries cut & then area stumped, costing some £40
