Francis Edward Story - Letters 1979

My dear Nancy
I am used to large writing paper & Esther found me this!  Yes!  I have an address book when I can find it.  It dates back to 1922 & one of the first entries is T? Pourney-Thompson who wrote to me c/o Grindlays (Army bank) to come & to see her recovering from an operation.  I had met her on board a ship when returning from an unsuccessful "fishing fleet" sally to Poona & she was a cousin of Pinky Adams a distant cousin of yours on her mother's side. "Dummy" Adams was stone deaf (father of P!) But could lip read perfectly & rumour said he could tell what you were writing by the movement of your pen - I wonder!

Yes I will keep the Indian letters also sent to me from Major A.E.H. Lig OBE my C.O. in the R.D.H.  I wrote to him from Kohat asking if there would be room for me in the new reorganised regt.  He replied hardly possible as a regt was returning from Palestine with a full complement & strongly advising me to take what was due & get out.  He hated India & anything to do with it & was only staying on to put his boy through Winchester & Sandhurst to the X Hussars.
I didn't know May Jane had a cottage so near Bingfield the Back Lane (very stoney) was bordered on one side by the Cow Pasture & on the other by the back lawn & the lawn and garden - any little bits bits on news about Bingfield are very interesting to me.  Isn't there a flat on the first floor or somewhere?  Was the old kitchen with its 1/2 underground window still in use?  Did you meet Polly B???'s husband Lucas Clements?  He is an O.C.  and Jack Halpin & Travis Blackley - Cavan Tennis players.
It's a nasty northerly day, wind & rain & I cannot do much in the garden.  Have been on a painting binge & this morning was able to brush down the clothes line props & then down came the rain.  The TV is hopeless until 5.00 PM when there is a league football from Sydney.

I stayed in Dublin with the J.B.  & took in the House Show where I re-met Major Diggie La Touche (16 Cav) of the Irish banking family.  He was tubercular & only did LIGHT duty in India - he was Field Treasure Chest Officer when I knew him in Kohat.  Had a dance at East House & one at Howth Castle - both very good & the conversation was all about the S.F.  raids & what was taken!  Joan Story wouldn't come out but we had tea at Michell's in Grafton Street.  A nephew of the ???  was my buddy at the school in Dalkey. Vera was then at Alexandra College.

I think I told you I visited May Jane living in a cottage on the way to the lake & no husband John to be seen & she said he was '???  behind the hedge' as he thought I was the 'po-liss'!  I was wearing brown field ???  on account of the long which grass.
Have just had afternoon tea in the sun porch, a high wind & high sea with breakers, the bowling club lower green is flooded.

Am looking forward to the package which I will Julie send on to ???  How nice of you to take the trouble.  Thank you.
Love from us both
Teddy
