Our Family History
The Genealogy of the Story Family

Fay Ogden

When I was a child we wrote letters to Father Christmas asking for a few things we would like for Christmas.
A few days before the Christmas tree was delivered to my grandparents house, where we would be staying over the Christmas holiday. We were told that it had been sent early as Father Christmas hadn't time to deliver the trees as well as all the presents.!
We would go off to bed and told that if we didn't go to sleep there would be no presents.
The adult members of the family would then decorate the lounge and tree. In the morning Grandpa would go into the lounge and light the fire and put on the tree lights. We would all have breakfast etc. and then Grandpa would call us all and we would line up outside the lounge door which Grandpa would open to let us in.
I always remember how magical the room looked with the tree lights on and the fire blazing. The curtains still closed to make it special and magical!....
The grownups would sit down, curtains were opened and we children would start looking at the presents and handing them out to everyone. Then began the big OPENING. Mum with a pencil and paper making a list of who gave what to whom. The excitement when an extra special gift was unwrapped. Only one present at a time and opened carefully to preserve the paper.
Later the menfolk and us children would be sent off to the swing park across the road with our new outdoor toys while Chistmas dinner was cooked. After which we children were put to bed for a rest as we were going to be allowed to stay up late for Christmas night. (It also gave the adults time to have a snooze!!)
