Francis Edward Story - Letters 1917

My dear Mummy,
I'm not quite sure where you are at present but I shall address this two Lixham Gardens.

I shall start from the beginning and tell you all about it up to now.  After I left you I went back to the platform & waited about talking to the other fellows until the train started.  There were 7 in the carriage altogether & I knew three of them.  We stopped first at some godless little place in Wiltshire.  We all got out & walked up & down the platform.  Taunton was the next stop & we stayed there some time.  At Exeter we were presented with a cup of tea & a bun.  We got down here about 8 o'clock & were told to get out & take our hand luggage out.  We then started to unload the luggage vans.  It was very good fun chucking the crates & things about.  I was able to find all my luggage except my helmet cases which I have since seen aboard, so Grindlay's man has not played us false.  We were told to come aboard a certain ship which was nearby.  After waiting for ages I managed to get to an officer in the smoking room where I signed on & was told where my bunk was.  I then went down & deposited my suitcase & came up on deck again.  I then found that I was too late for breakfast, but managed to exist on some Mackintosh's toffee which I had bought on the way.  We then fell in & our names were called out in alphabetical order & we were allotted to our various sections.

We were then told that we could go until 4 o'clock.  I went out with the three other OCs & got some lunch & did shopping.  It was raining all the time so came back pretty soon.  Have just been sorting out luggage, fearful business!!  But managed to get all straight at last.  I don't know when we sail.  I suppose you know you may not write except to Quetta.

Love to Aunt Lou & Dorothy of

yr affectionate son
