Bingfield is the Story family home where the Story aunts Florrie and Charlie lived. It was a big old place on a hill overlooking Torquay.
In 1946 Florrie wrote a new will leaving the house and contents to Arthur Patrick Story (living in Ireland at the time) and his wife Daisy. The intention was that they would move there when Florrie died.
When Florrie died in 1963, it was sold to a man who was going to turn it into a hotel, but while he was drawing up the plans, thieves and vandals broke into the house and stripped it bare; they even took the staircase. Neighbours had heard what they assumed to be workmen starting the conversion. The shell that was left was uneconomic to repair, so it was demolished. There is a close of new houses there now, called Bingfield Close:
