  • Notes
    • In searching for the parents and birth in Oxford City of William Taylor (born 1832) there were few possibilities.

      1. Thomas Taylor married Edith Smith in 1829
      their children were:

      William Oxford, St.Thomas 1829
      Thomas William Oxford, St.Thomas 1831
      John Isaac Oxford, St.Thomas 1834
      Martha Susan Oxford, St.Thomas 1836
      Edith Oxford, St Thomas
This family appears in the 1841 Census:

      HO107/ 0891/ 018/ Folio 10 &11 Oxford City Oxford St. Thomas
      1 Fish Row
Head Surname Forename Age Occupation Born In County
      TAYLOR Thomas 35 Lab N
      TAYLOR Edith 40 Y
      TAYLOR Thomas 9 Y
      TAYLOR John 7 Y
      TAYLOR Martha 4 Y

William Taylor born in 1829 died 1 day old. Buried Oxford St Thomas
Edith Taylor (snr) died 1843 aged 46, Buried Oxford St Thomas (Certificate held)
Widowed father Thomas married Susannah Hilliard in 1843

      Children:

Martha Taylor married Benjamin Bryan 1858
Edith Taylor married Henry Wing 1864
John Isaac Taylor married Elizabeth Williams in 1871

The possibility was considered that Thomas William (born 1831) took the name William. The earlier William had died at birth and his father was Thomas so the family may I have considered it would simplify matters if there was only one Thomas in the family.

However Thomas William Bachelor aged 48, married Louisa Goodhall spinster aged 41 in 26 December 1881 (G.R.O, December Qtr 1881, Oxford 3a 1191). Father of the groom-Thomas Taylor. Witnesses: John Taylor and Edith Wing

Louisa Goodhall appears in the 1881 Oxford Census, aged 40. occupation dressmaker, born Longworth, Berks

The age of the groom, his bachelor status, his fathers name and particularly the names of the two witnesses (his siblings) identify beyond all reasonable doubt that this is the Thomas William s.o. Edith and Thomas and not my great grandfather who had died in 1875, before the above marriage had taken place.
In addition, at the four children's marriages,Thomas their father's occupation is given as "boatman" or occasionally "labourer". He was described as boatman at the marriage of his son John Isaac Taylor in 1871 whereas the father of my great grandfather was described as carpenter at the marriage in Warfield in 1864.

Thomas William Taylor died March Qtr 1881aged 52 (recorded under Thomas Taylor). Oxford 3a 557.
His widow Louisa Taylor as a taileress aged 53 in the 1891 Census of Oxford St Ebbe RG12/1169 Folio 34. Born in
Hinton, Berkshire (NB Hinton Waldrist and Longworth were adjacent Berkshire hamlets which are now part of Oxfordshire).

Conclusion Thomas William Taylor son of Thomas and Edith is not my great grandfather.

Another possible candidate for great grandfather William Taylor:

William Taylor son of Maria Taylor born January 1832

Baptism: 24 February 1832 William Thomas TAYLOR s. Maria, spinster, Boot Alley, born 6 Jan., Oxford St Giles

Burial: 27 August 1836 Thomas Taylor 4years 8 months of King Street, , St Peter in the East

This date of birth exactly fits with the burial age of Thomas TAYLOR buried 27th Aug 1836. A double check of the city baptism index shows no other Thomas TAYLOR baptised in the city at a date consistent with this burial age. Hence there seems a strong likelihood that this William Thomas TAYLOR is the one buried at St Peter in the East in 1836.
