The first Europeans to visit Lake Wanaka and to work on a detailed survey of the district were Edward Jollie and William Young. They explored a portion of the west side of Lake Wanaka. Jollie and Young by their explorations of 1858-59, with the primary task of plotting the boundary between Otago and Canterbury, opened up the Wanaka district.
